You are correct the foot pump works from the fresh water tanks- The salt water at the galley sink is another counter mounted sea-water pump.

We got ALMA's Atomic Four out of the boat without any issues last week.

We used the technique shared by vessel CHANCE #10 and it worked perfectly!

Now the venerable marine engine is in my workshop and getting the royal treatment.

Before you remove the rudder on a 323 be sure to check the sleeve axels on the Edson Steering for the source of a "clunk" under sail.

I grew up with wood boats. We came to prefer kerosene and kitchen matches to Git-Rot.

If you are referring to the half-bulkheads forward of the nav-station and Galley they might not be too hard to replace.
They offer a hand hold and stiffen the hull in concert with the hull liner. They are not primary structural elements- but important none the less.


First you need to discover what happened. Nothing would be worse than replacing them and having the new ones rot too.

I would guess windows leaking and fresh water running into the area where wood lays against the hull liner. Water can sit there a long time.

Check the bulkheads between the salon and head too- This is a job you want to wrap-up all at once.

If the (new) bulkheads are too big to fit through the companionway you can scarf together the replacements in the cabin.

Look to West System for these techniques.

Where is an exterior strainer that has removable grate?

All the more reason for two- one on each side of keel tee'd together. One side fouls a bag it slides off 'cause the suction is split. Two holes though...

I've never had a strainer except the louvers on the through-hull. I had a problem once with debris clogging the engine intake through hull. I needed to swap the engine intake over to the galley salt water pump intake until I could haul out. No internal strainer could've helped that problem and no other situation I'm aware of has made an internal strainer necessary. The additional equipment, hardware and hose connections would present opportunity for a leak to cause the intake raw water pump to draw air and that would be a headache.

I often consider adding another through hull strainer on the other side of the hull tee'd into the engine intake similar to modern drains in spas and hot tubs that eliminate a chance of a clogged intake causing problems. With so many plastic bags and junk in the waterways today this simple addition would prevent grief should a bag come up alongside an intake- The other side would take over and the bag would slough off-

Does anyone know if a Pearson 30 companionway hatch storm hood is identical to the one used for the Pearson 323?

I have access to a P 30 hood and want to know if it will fit my 323?

I have a friend with a Bertram who had good success with a watchmaster recondition. It was very expensive.

I removed the acrylic on mine and was luck enough to have a much bigger hatch given to me.

I took that acrylic and cut it down to fit my hatch. I glued it to the aluminum and did not use the phillips screws and did not drill the acrylic. The Hatchmasters also do not use the obsolete screw method.

I took the front hatch acrylic and cut it down to fit the midships hatch (without mounting holes).

They held up nicely but eventually it leaked. Now I have cleaned the hatches and applied electrical tape to the perimeter where the seam is.

They are completely leak free.

Sure I'll need to change out the tape every few years...

Far better than a thousand dollar 'restoration' that will also eventually leak-

The original wiring on my 323 #74 is still performing as it did when built in Portsmouth. I have not had to replace the wiring in my mast. If anything is wrong with the old wire it is now too robust (therefore HEAVY) for LED fixtures.

ALMA is sailed every weekend in the ocean 43 years now. No wires have corroded.

The ABYC is not always the best recommendation. But if rewiring is in your future there surely is no down side except expense in following the ABYC color codes.

The only ABYC color code I always follow is the 'new' color for 12V DC ground. The new color is yellow not black as we are all used to.

The yellow is to make sure no one confuses the 120V AC HOT Black wire with a simple 12V Ground. That error could be dangerous.

But feel free to use Radio Shack speaker wire for speakers... There is no need to spend a fortune on Anchor Brand 'tinned' Boat Cable. It is just a waste of money.

He removed the centerboard and cobbled up some strange fiberglass to cover the retracted centerboard. What a loon-
