Cruising / Pacific Loop recap
« on: March 30, 2017, 12:27:19 AM »
My two cents for people thinking about cruising in a P323.

In 2015-16 I sailed my 1977 P323 on a 14,000 mile loop around the East Pacific - Seattle - Mexico - French Polynesia - Hawaii - Seattle.

It was the boat I had rather than my ideal cruising boat. But it turned out to be a great boat for single and occasional double handing.  P323's do great off the wind and that was most of the trip fortunately. My best day was over 150 miles north of Hawaii. A typical day in the trades was about 125 miles. The trip from Mexico to the Marquesas was 24 days (3100 miles) for an average of about 124 miles a day).

It was also a very comfortable and predictable ride, and I had more confidence in the boat at the end of the trip than at the beginning. I also didn't see a smaller boat on the whole trip!

I can definitely appreciate the benefits of a larger boat and a boat that does better upwind. But if I would have bought that larger faster boat I would have been paying for it instead of crusing. Cheers.

Steering System, Hull Structure / steering fix
« on: March 29, 2017, 11:51:09 PM »
Thought I would share this. My 323 always had a little resistance and slack in the steering and after many offshore miles it developed a concerning clunk. It turned out that the bronze pins that serve as the axles for the steering pulleys were severely worn. As a result the pulleys were wobbling. I checked with edson and they wanted about $60 for two replacements. So I bought some bronze rod and made them for about $12. It made a big difference! Steering is perfect now.
