Deck Mounted Hardware / 323 rear pulpit
« on: June 01, 2022, 11:17:55 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to rebed the pulpits on the boat and I noticed there appears to be some sort of a gasket between the pulpit and the boat on all of the rear pulpit mounts.? It's probably about an 1/8th thick or so. I didn't want to remove it yet until I knew what it was and if i can still get some. Maybe a hard rubber spacer? Any idea's?? Thanks.

@Selene, Thank you for the information. Do you feel you have more control over the boom after you installed the rigid vang or with the older purchase system? Do you still use the topping lift or did you remove it? You speak of compression, but how high can you raise the boom? Usually when I reef, I need to raise the boom with the topping lift. Can this still be done or will the vang top out? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

Just returned from a sail to Block Island. Great sail. I only had 1 casualty,  the mast bail for the boom vang was forcefully removed from the mast without prejudice by the 30 knot gust that smashed us. It literally ripped right off the boat.

Figured now would be the time for a rigid vang. I see many of you have installed them. My question is which model Garhauer vang did you guys get? Some of you have mentioned making the spring stronger? Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

Sails and Canvas / Re: New to flying a spinnaker
« on: August 05, 2021, 12:21:37 PM »
You currently have everything you need.

I have a set of secondary 40's I mounted as far back as possible and still allow the winch handle to work. I have an Asymmetrical, not a symmetrical spinnaker. As long as your kite isn't that fat, you will have a good working angle right to the winch. If you kite has a long foot you would need to mount a block as aft as possible to redirect the sheet back to the winch. In all honesty, for all of the additional work to mount the block 2 ft aft to redirect the sheet, you're really not gaining a whole lot of angle to the sheet line.  If you have a high flying clew and the sheet angle into the winch is steep, you can set up something simple like a barber hauler or a snatch block to keep the angle of the sheet into the winch a lot shallower.

Di you replace the transmission as well or did you use the old one?

If you used a new/different transmission, make sure it has the same gear ratio as the old one or you will need to re-prop the boat.

I'm assuming full throttle is 2000RPM? Are you blowing exhaust smoke? if so what color? White can be a head gasket, Black is either load(prop) or fuel issue.

Good Luck

I sail in Long Island Sound, out of Glen Cove, and normally August is pretty much a thin air month.  Normally I would say YES to your question but with all of the storms we have had every other day this year, the breeze has been up almost all the time now. This year is def not the norm.

I have a 323 and I did mine last year with a custom 40 gal waste tank.  I know it's a different boat, but maybe you can get some idea's from my post.

Yikes. This is going to be my fall project. Thanks for all of the tips!

Did you wind up painting the bandit stripe? I would like to do mine but the thought of it keeps me awake at night.

Ports & Hatches / Companionway Lock

So i made a new companionway drop board and I want to get the stainless plates that mount on the board opening that the sliding hasp goes through to lock it.

I cant find them because I don't know what they are called. I have googled everything I can think of and nothing.

So what the heck are these plates called??? If you have a source, please list it. If you have a pair you want to sell that works too. Thanks in advance.

Selene, Thanks for jumping on. I don't have a battery monitor as of yet.

How do you calibrate the monitor to the batteries? Do you subtract annually for loss of  battery capacity? If so, do you just  subtract something like 3% per year or is there a mechanical means to figure that out?

Does that Blue Seas panel you listed actually fit on our boat where the existing panel is? It looks really nice.

Let the alternator charge the lead-acid starter battery, and use a hefty DC-DC charger to get the alternator's output to the LiFePO4 house bank.

Option A sounds like a good plan. It doesn't need to be a hefty charger. You can parallel many smaller DC-DC chargers you want to bump the amperage. By doing so you are also creating redundancy. If one of your chargers in parallel fail you still have another. If you have 1 hefty charger and it fails you have nothing. Also, if anything would take a hit it would be the cheaper, easily replicable lead acid battery on the front line instead of the expensive lithium's. B sounds like a great plan as well, but it seems there would be a few more moving parts and the fear of spiking a Lithium would be looming if you drain them deep enough. You could always start the boat and run the house from the house bank if something happened to the starting battery. You wouldn't be able to do that so much on just 1 starting battery.
