Sails and Canvas / Re: Upholstery fabric for interior cushions
« on: May 10, 2013, 03:49:19 PM »
Anyone needing fabrics for the interior cushions should try this site. They were awesome. I found a Brisa leather product that is normally $80 per yard for $16 per yard. the finished cushions are very nice. They have other fabrics as well for pennies on the dollar of you would normally pay. Good luck.

Engine and Drive Train / Re: Cold Start Button on Volvo MD11-C
« on: February 25, 2013, 01:30:40 PM »
Good advice here. My MD 11 normally needs the throttle to be all the way full open to engage the Cold Start button. Huge difference when engaged, the motor turns right over when cold. I painted the top of my Cold Start button with Orange Fluorescent paint so you can see it clearly if you have to send someone down to do it manually. Good idea if you need to start the engine in a hurry.

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Re: AIS class B transponder
« on: January 06, 2013, 02:23:25 PM »
I put in a Garmin 740S chartplotter and radar along with a Garmin AIS 300 VHF radio that picks up and shows all AIS targets on the Chartplotter screen this past year. It works great but the alarm feature as mentioned is annoying in a busy harbor. Good news is that you can turn off the alarm if needed.  If I had to do it over again, I would have purchased the Garmin AIS 600 AIS VHF radio that not only receives AIS targets but also transmits your position as well.  I had a cheap attack when I was doing all the electronics at one time.  I am consdiering selling my AIS 300 and buying the Garmin AIS 600 this next year. It would be a easy conversion with the system I have. I would feel more comfortable in Fog or for that fact all the time that other large ships can see me as well as me seeing them.

Dolce Vita, who do you have for fabricating the new mast step? I would like to have your contact number to see if they can build one for me. Mine is getting to the point that it will probally need to be replaced in the next year or two. A picture on the web site would be helpful when you get it.  Thanks

Here is a picture of my Locker.  It was custom made out of Teak.  It is not a hard job for someone with basic woodworking skills.

I am going to have to do this as well in the near future.  Please keep everyone informed on where you get the new step made and how much it was. Good luck

Engine and Drive Train / Re: Tachometer Quit
« on: September 13, 2012, 06:06:34 PM »
I have had my Tach do the same thing a couple of times on my Volvo MD11. Find the wire that plugs into the sending unit on the motor and I will bet it is off or has a bad connection. Mine slipped off and I plugged it back on to the sending unit and the tach worked fine again. I put a piece of Electical tape around the connector to make sure it did not slip off again. Good luck

In case anyone wants to put a new Transducer in, we put in a Airmar 12 degree that works perfect. It is hooked up to a new garmin 720s Chartplotter

Good Luck.  I also have a 1979 323 #192.  Bought it last year and it also was my first boat. We have had a blast sailing her.  Make sure you have the hulll surveyed for blisters and look closely at the mast step. Other than those issues, these boats are pretty solid.
