Plumbing and Galley Systems / Refrigeration
« on: July 30, 2014, 09:50:51 AM »
I know this has been discussed in the past, but has anyone installed refrigeration on their boat? I'm looking at an Adler Barbour set up and I know that insulation of the box is a good first step to minimize power consumption.  One question I have is does anyone know the ice box capacity in cubic feet?  This sounds like it might be a question for Ed.  The largest compressor capacity seems to be for a 15 cubic foot space.  Just under that is a model for 9 CF.  Appreciate any advice from the group.  Also as to brand, reliability, etc.

Engine and Drive Train / Volvo Engine Available
« on: April 08, 2014, 03:12:57 PM »
Two years ago, I had my boat repowered.  The original Volvo diesel engine had about 2500 hours on it to the best of my recollection.  I ran into the guy who installed the new engine this weekend and he said he still had the old engine and would like to get it out of his shop. Since it was running when I drove the boat up to his dock, he couldn't bear to throw it away.  The only claim I'll make was that it is a complete, engine, in running condition when it was pulled from the boat.  The engine is in New Rochelle, NY. Free.

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Wind Generator Recommendations
« on: November 21, 2013, 05:24:59 PM »
Was wondering if anyone has recent experience with wind generators as part of your overall charging system - what model do you have, how is it working, would you recommend it?, etc.  Remarks from Air Breeze, Superwind 350, or KISS unit owners especially appreciated.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Anchor windlass
« on: November 05, 2013, 08:11:49 PM »
After manually retrieving my 35 pound cqr with 100 ft of chain several times this season I have decided if I want to keep anchoring my boat I need some assistance in the form of a windlass. Would be VERY interested in hearing the selection and experiences of other 323 captains on this subject. As always pics very instructive as well as informed discussion.

General Discussion / HIN Problems
« on: July 30, 2013, 01:32:34 PM »
I was re-registering my boat in NY last week and the DMV (ugh) clerk told me my HIN was wrong and asked me to get a picture or etching of it.  The number on it is:
PEA = Pearson
58 = Model (323)
148 = (hull number)
M78 = Model Year (1978)
H = Build month (March)
The problem is that after all that follows "-P".  Does anyone know what -P (dash P) means and do other 323's have that.  The DMV's problem is that their system is only set up to accept a 12 digit hull number and the dash P doesn't fit.  Any ideas?

Exterior Finish and Fiberglass / Interior Teak Bulkheads
« on: July 22, 2013, 06:01:08 PM »
I had recently read that lemon oil works well on the interior teak bulk heads.  Previous owners of Dulcinea had done me the favor of not varnishing the bulkheads in the main salon, but as a result the wood was dry looking and unevenly colored where cushions had shaded the wood.  I bought a bottle of Parker & Bailey's Lemon Oil from Amazon (I'm sure there are other great brands out there).  Following the instructions, a rag and some elbow grease, it was about a 30-minute affair and the results were really good.  The wood soaked it up but didn't leave a residue or wasn't tacky or oily at all.  It looks a lot more "alive".  The stuff did not streak and produced a look that was consistent, even in those areas that were slightly off-color due to the shading by the cushions.  Compared to our normal projects, it was easy and the results were great.  Just thought I'd pass it along.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Anchor Platform/Bow Sprit
« on: May 08, 2013, 01:07:13 PM »
My boat, hull #148, did NOT come with an anchor platform as many (most) appear to have.  I don't want to buy a salvage boat just to get the platform and don't really need any other parts.  Does anyone know of a source for these.  May someone has had one made?  Alternatively, if someone has the dimensions of theirs, perhaps I can find a shop to fabricate one.
thanks,
Dennis

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Transducers
« on: April 30, 2013, 10:17:19 PM »
I finally got around to installing the ST60 guages I bought a few months ago.  The transducer for the depth guage that came with the instrument is a plastic thru hull that can't be installed to shoot straight down.  They (Airmar) make two alternatives.  The first is one just like I have but also comes in 12 degree and 20 degree models that internally compensate for the dead rise.  That's a P19.  The other one is a bronze long stem contraption that has to mounted in a fairing block that has to be cut to match the dead rise and screwed into the hull.  That's the B45 I believe.  The P19 looks like the much easier install and I would be inclined to go with it.  Any recent experience or thoughts appreciated.  Is one better than the other in terms of performance? Also, I believe the dead rise under the forward settee just aft of the head bulkhead is 20 degrees, am I right on that?
Thanks guys.

Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Forestay length
« on: February 12, 2013, 03:46:55 PM »
I couldn't make it out from the sail plan posted on this site, but does anyone know the correct forestay length?  I imagine it may have varied slightly over the years.  My boat is a '78.
Thanks,

Mast and Spar Issues / Spreaders
« on: December 24, 2012, 07:22:25 PM »
Does anyone have a measurement for spreaders? I'm interested in knowing the length of the spreader from the mast end to the point where the cap shroud contacts the spreader. RigRite has the spreader but mine seems to be a different measurement from what they have as a standard for the 323. My boat is a 1978.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Winch parts
« on: November 23, 2012, 10:42:28 PM »
The primary winches on my boat (I suppose most 323's) are Lewmar 43's.  On removing and disassembling them it is apparent that I need pawl springs and circlips at a minimum.  Must I go directly to Lewmar and pray they still support a 34 year old winch or does anyone have a source? ....or are pawl springs and circlips interchangeable?

Deck Mounted Hardware / Coaming Box Teak Trip
« on: November 07, 2012, 04:21:34 PM »
Does anyone have/know of a pattern or template for the teak trim around the coaming boxes?  Alternatively, has anyone had a carpenter do theirs that could be replicated?  They might not all be exactly the same size, but I'd be willing to take a chance.

Mast and Spar Issues / Mast Step
« on: October 14, 2012, 08:35:31 PM »
I need some advice from those who have replaced their mast step. Mine is the typical rusted/rotted step and it looks like the bolts holding in have rusted and the heads have rounded off.  Are these machine bolts installed into metal or are they lag Balts screwed into wood?  Any advice from personal experience removing this step greatly appreciated.

Has anyone fitted a refrigeration unit to their ice box?  Interested in which unit you used. Adler Barbour?

Has anyone installed Kato dinghy davits on their 323?  Any installation pic would be appreciated.
