General Discussion / So......what projects are you snow sailors up too?
« on: February 07, 2015, 02:15:03 PM »
We crossed the Gulf with Searenity a month ago. 36 hour passage from Carrabelle to Hudson Florida. Right now I am in prep mode for Summer vacation. Installing 300W of solar panels to the boat to be able to run a freezer and fans while we spend a couple of months gunk holing to the Dry Tortuga's and then up the Keys and eastern side of Florida until we get to St. Augustine, where we will be keeping our boat for a couple of years.

What are y'all up to?

Thank you. Did not get the flush done yet. High on the list.

Welcome to the family. I just finished moving my family across the state and it had been July since I was on my boat. We all felt so wonderful spending 4 days on her. I need to get her moved from Panama City to Saint Augustine. We want to jump this past week but the weather was not right for a 160 mile jump across the gulf. Moved her intercoastal to Carabelle to set up anoth jump window in late December. We want to keep her in Fort Meyers for the winter and then when we hit our summer break, spend a few months gunk holing the keys and work our way up the coast.

Be prepared for most of your major decisions to involve what is best for the boat. We used to have a three hour drive to her so when we bought a new car, it had to get at least 40mpg. We commuted at least two weekends a month. I did a yearly expense budget for my boat a few years ago. Counting slip fees, insurance, gas money to get back and forth to her and routine maintenance.........it runs me almost $10K a year and that is not factoring the price of diesel we put in her!  :o

Make sure you love your boat before you do any expense budgets.

Engine and Drive Train / MD11c Thermostat part number?
« on: November 30, 2014, 03:04:51 PM »
Any ideas on where I can find a new thermostat and gasket for the MD11C online? I want to do a chemical flush of the cooling system in a closed loop. The articles I have read say to take the thermostat out while doing it. I figured while I have it out, I can replace it.

That is a nice mod. This is on my list of things to do. It will make winter sailing a lot nicer.

That looks very nice and much more functional.

Has anyone researched moving the traveler and main sheet to the cabin top? I would like to eventually enclose the cabin and would prefer to have all of it out of the cabin.

I have read of people that had a leak at their pump shaft seals and they said they got water in their crankcase also. I have had no water getting into my oil. Any thoughts?

I use a navionics app on my iphone for backup.

I do also. I also like to use it to put in a pretty accurate route when motoring through the ICW and know how long it will take me to get to the next place. Of course with the sails up, that type of calculating does very little.

Could you explain cradle a bit more? I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish?

Thank you for the information Richard

I have done some checking and it seems like if the oil was weeping here it would be a bearing that is on the shaft. I am trying to find more information as I also lack the ability to properly press a new bearing on the shaft. At least now I have a place to refine my search. I did find this page useful in understanding the pump better with good photos.

I am leaning toward front seal. It is irritating but so low that I do not feel the need to pay someone to disassemble to replace the seal.

I have the MD11C and it varies between .35 and .4. I motor in the Gulf ICW and go with and against the current so my RPM is between 1600 and 1800. There are times I am at 1600 and making 7 knots with current and wind so I do not feel the need to increase the rpms. I also have a bigger 3 blade prop. We just finished a 5 day cruise covering 200 miles under power. We did some sailing also, but that is not always the best approach in the ditch of the ICW.

Just an update. I always have a little oil on the starboard motor mount, not enough to drip, but enough to keep it shiny. It is right by the oil filter. I occasionally notice a little oil in the water under my  shaft. This drives me batty that I cannot find the source.

Not just comfort, but safety. I was up the mast for at least a half hour in a poor fitting harness changing the anchor light. The leg loop slid up, cut off my circulation. I told my wife to get me down fast when my thigh started to throb. By the time I was down I was very faint. It was during the trip up the mast in the picture. Never again in just a vinyl harness.
