Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Loose Bonding wire
« on: December 01, 2022, 02:39:59 PM »
I found this loose bonding stud the other day. It's in the bilge near the engine raw water through hull. The stud just pulls right out. It may have broke away from something buried in the fiberglass like a bonding strip of some sort.  The other end of the wire is attached to the engine. I replaced the seacock a few years ago and am pretty sure it wasn't connected to this wire. I'm not sure how to fix this. I've attached pics.

Anyone have davits plans you would be willing to share?

Quite interesting historical perspective and overall review of Pearson. Makes for a nice introduction to Pearson for anyone in the sailboat market.

Plumbing and Galley Systems / Atomic 4 Water Heater Plumbing
« on: November 19, 2020, 10:28:19 AM »
Anyone have a water heater that operates off either engine raw water cooling or 110VAC?  The plumbing from engine to heater baffles me.  It's very hard to regulate engine temperature.  There is a gate valve with round handle that I believe is meant to control the temperature but is quite temperamental.  It's very easy for raw water to completely bypass the engine and circulate through the manifold causing overheating.  It further baffles me why the external inlet to the thermostat housing is bypassed.  Any suggestions as to how best to plumb this?  Picture attached.

Has anyone modified the backstay in such as way so as to keep it from encroaching in the space directly above the helm seat?  It's quite uncomfortable to sit right in the middle of the helm seat.  I have to sit on either side of the backstay.

Steering System, Hull Structure / Binnacle Sissy Bar
« on: June 30, 2020, 11:11:11 PM »
My binnacle has what I would call a sissy bar or handhold attached to it. The bar is attached to the cockpit floor with plastic feet that are crumbling.  Any suggestions where I may find replacements? I've attached a picture.

Mast and Spar Issues / Boom height
« on: June 13, 2020, 09:41:33 AM »
My boom extends about halfway into the cockpit, is 5ft above the cockpit floor and rubs on my dodger. I'm considering raising my boom about 15" or so. It has 8 screws holding it to the mast. I'd also have to reconfigure the top of the main. Anything else to consider?

Interior Structures / Cushion configuration for dinette berth

What combination of cushions are used to make the dinette berth? A po replaced all the interior cushions so maybe I'm missing a critical cushion.

Engine and Drive Train / Atomic 4 compression test results
« on: April 15, 2020, 10:17:59 AM »
I removed all spark plugs to perform test and drissled a little mystery oil in each cylinder. Here are results:
#1 110
#2 80
#3 70
#4 110

Should I be concerned about 2 & 3?

I spent a day trying to figure out why I couldn't get gas to flow. I finally noticed a tiny air bubble at the rim of the sediment bowl. The cork gasket had dried out so air was getting sucked in. Advance Auto supplied me with a Willys Felpro 773 gasket for $1.79!

General Discussion / Clinton Pearson, RIP
« on: April 14, 2020, 08:48:13 PM »
I ran across this in Scuttlebutt today:

Clinton J. Pearson, 91, of Bristol (RI), passed away at Newport Hospital on April 4, 2020. He was the husband of Carolyn (Broomhead) Pearson for 60 years and the son of the late Lillian and Carl Pearson.

Born in Pawtucket, RI, on March 6, 1929, he attended school in Pawtucket and graduated from Pawtucket High School in 1947. He attended and graduated from Brown University as part of the Navy ROTC. Clinton served in the U.S. Navy, as a midshipman aboard the USS Missouri and then with an officer’s commission aboard the USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.

His boatbuilding career began in 1956. He was the founder and chairman of both the Pearson Yacht Company and Bristol Yachts, which spawned the birth of the fiberglass boat industry in Southern New England, an industry that ultimately employed thousands of people and fundamentally changed the boating world.

Building more than 20,000 boats during his career, his designs are still enjoyed by their owners today.

In 1959 he married his lifelong love, Carolyn, and they made their home in Bristol. He was honored as the Chief Marshall of the Bristol Fourth of July Celebration in 1961.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Lisa and Dr. Thomas Enright of Bristol (RI), Joshua Pearson and Kimberly Gastle of Toronto (CAN), Dana and Teresa Pearson of Providence (RI), and Martha and Kevin Handley of Bristol (RI); a sister, Marilyn Walton of Satellite Beach (FL); ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Newport Hospital Foundation, 11 Friendship St., Newport, RI 02840 or to HopeHealth Hospice, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 0290

Exterior Finish and Fiberglass / Boot stripe color

I need to repaint my blue boot stripe in a few places. Was that a standard color back in 1977?

Mast and Spar Issues / Mast tie rod

Another topic mentioned mast tie rod. I believe that is the rod next to the mast reaching from the mast collar to the step foot.  What is its purpose?

Engine and Drive Train / Hand crank atomic 4
« on: March 17, 2020, 09:42:49 PM »
My atomic 4 is reverse mounted with v drive which makes access to flywheel very difficult. Hand cranking from there would be out of the question. Any other way to hand crank? I'm not sure it can even be started by hand.

Plumbing and Galley Systems / Bonding
« on: December 02, 2019, 09:14:14 PM »
I'm replacing my raw water thru-hull and noticed the old one wasn't bonded. The ground wire terminates nearby. I suppose I need to run a short wire to my new thru-hull.  Sound right?
