Cruising / Circumnavigation in a 323
« on: April 02, 2023, 07:02:47 PM »
Back in 2010 I received an email from young gentleman interested in the Person 323. I showed him my boat, some of the work that I had done to ready the boat for coastal and ocean sailing...and then I promptly lost track of this young man.

Fast forward to last week (March 2023) and I received an email from this same man. He was asking about a boat part and he thought that I might have the specifications that he needed. Unfortunately, I was unable to help him but I did learn that in the intervening years he had purchased a 323 and was only about 1800 nm from completing a circumnavigation.

Even though I've been without my 323 since 2016, I thought many of you on this list might appreciate knowing a little more about this man's adventures:

And this about getting the 323 ready for a circumnavigation: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/pearson-323-enchantress-circumnavigation-plan-140365.html

If you are like me, you'll appreciate Austin as an artist, filmmaker, sailor, and adventurer.

Richard

Cruising / August 2015 Cruise to Monterey Bay, California
« on: September 26, 2015, 02:23:15 AM »
I've just finished my cruise log for our 12-day cruise from Berkeley to Monterey Bay and back. We saw more whales than I have seen in all of my other sailing days combined. We kayaked up Elkhorn Slough and out to Point Pinos, bought fresh Ling Cod from the from a fishing boat at Moss Landing, and generally had a great time. I hope you enjoy my photos and log.

Ports & Hatches / Resealing and Rebedding Fixed Ports
« on: May 14, 2015, 09:20:33 PM »
After avoiding this project for a couple years I decided 2015 was the year to tackle the job of resealing and rebedding the two starboard fixed ports on Libations. I am now finished! Many thanks to Selene, Alma, Sea Haven, and Dolce Vita for their helpful comments and suggestions.

My project summary is here: http://rollinscs.com/boatpages/projects2apage.htm  I have tried to gather into one place the helpful tips, comments, and previous project summaries that I found most helpful.

Best wishes to all for Happy Holidays and great sailing adventures in the New Year!

It would be great to hear of plans for your sailing adventures and boat projects for 2015! For Libations that includes a two week cruise to Monterey Bay and resealing my two starboard fixed ports...a project that I have been putting off for too long. And several shorter overnight Bay cruises as we find time and energy.

Cruising / Musings during the storm...of other boats to sail someday
« on: December 11, 2014, 08:52:53 PM »
It has been raining all day here in the San Francisco area. Early today Libations' anemometer recorded 33 knots while in her Berkeley slip. At Richmond just a few miles north SailFlow showed sustained wind speeds in the high 30s with gusts to nearly 50...while out at the San Francisco Sea Buoy (Buoy 46026) the steady winds peaked at 35 knots with gusts to 43.

All in all, it is a nice day to be ashore thinking of sailing...rather than actually doing so. For me, I have always thought the Pearson 367 (cutter) would be a great ocean boat and coastal cruiser...along with the Pacific Seacraft 37...or the Tayana 37. And then there is the Cal 40, the Baba 40...and the list goes on.

What would be your choice if you didn't have the most perfect boat of all...the Pearson 323!

On my last outing a cheek block on my main sail outhaul system failed; a cursory search for parts suggests this little repair project will be interesting.

My outhaul track and failed cheek block appear to be original...mounted on the port side of the boom. The track is 3/4" and the failed Schaefer cheek block is welded to a slider/car. The slider/cheek block assembly is moved along the track by a line secured to a pad eye (near the forward end of the track), which then passes through the cheek block, and returns forward along the boom to a cleat. The cheek block itself is attached to a wire rope that runs to the aft end of the boom, turns through a second cheek block (this one is still okay), and then runs forward to fasten to the clew fitting that slides in the boom track.

While I do not have all of the failed parts it appears that the Schaefer cheek block utilized 1-7/16 sheeve held between SS cheek plates that were about 2" in length. The car/slider itself measures about 3" in length. I have checked Rig Rite, Schaefer's web page, West Marine, Garhauer and can not find a suitable replacement.

I certainly do not want to replace the track and allow this repair project to grow into more than it really is; my focus is on replacing the cheek block and car/slide. If this does not work I suppose I could use my trusty Dremel tool to grind away the welds, separate the failed cheek block from the slide, and have someone weld a new cheek block to the slide.

Have any of you been down this path before? All thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated!

Engine and Drive Train / Fuel use, GPH
« on: March 31, 2014, 11:59:39 AM »
Generally I have not kept a running calculation of fuel use on Libations. But on my two cruises to southern California, one in 2008 and one in 2013, I did compute fuel use rates....and they were identical at 0.35 gallons per hour use over a total of about 240 hours of engine run time. My engine is the Volvo MD11C and I turn the large 3-blade cruising prop. I generally cruise at about 1800 rpm and rarely run the engine over 2000 rpm for any length of time.

I am curious about the fuel use rates that others have experienced, especially those with other engine or prop combinations. What has your experience shown?

Cruising / 2013 Cruise to the Channel Islands of California
« on: October 25, 2013, 02:15:22 PM »
For those interested in an armchair cruise on a 323, I have posted the log for the southbound portion of my month-long cruise from San Francisco to the Channel Islands. I will post the northbound log sometime over the next month or two.

Let me know if you have questions or see any glaring mistakes, typos, dead links, etc.
Thanks,
Richard

PS The link above is the same URL as that used by our webmaster on the "Cruising" button on the 323 home page....so no changes by our webmaster are needed to include this cruise in the reading list.

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Solar Panel Installation
« on: July 13, 2013, 10:53:58 AM »
I finally finished the installation of a 55-watt panel to charge my two battery banks. It is very satisfying to go to the boat and see both battery banks at 14+ volts. The panel is mounted on a hinge allowing it to be stowed in a vertical position if needed. I thought this would be an important aspect of the installation but so far I have not found the panel to be in the way at all....I doubt that it will be stowed very often.

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Battery Switch
« on: February 25, 2013, 03:06:21 PM »
I have a Perko battery switch on Libations and two group 27 batteries. When sailing I normally switch to one of the two batteries and hold the second in reserve. Then, when it is time to start the engine I turn the Perko switch to "all" before starting the engine. I have done this since owning the boat and everything seems to work just fine.

Occasionally I forget to turn the Perko switch to "all" before starting the engine. Again, no problem. But this prevents my "reserve" battery from being charged. When I notice my mistake I stop the engine, turn the Perko switch to "all", and restart the engine so that both batteries are being charged. This has been my practice because someone once told me to never turn the Perko switch while the alternator is charging.

Recently someone told me that stopping the engine was not necessary as long as I did not turn the Perko switch to "off". The presumption being that it is acceptable to switch from "1" to "all" to "2"....but not to "off".

Any comments? What is the real truth here? I assume my Perko switch is original equipment but I am not certain.

Thanks,
Richard

Electrical Systems & Electronics / AIS class B transponder
« on: January 03, 2013, 09:42:27 AM »
Does anyone have experience with AIS transponders? I have a NASA "Radar" AIS receiver that I really like, partly because of its low power requirement and because it is a stand alone unit. How much more power does a transponder require? Do ships and other commercial vessels monitor AIS? My use would be primarily for coastal cruises and offshore passages....not in enclosed waters such as SF Bay.

Cruising / Kayak or Hard Dink...how to carry on deck?
« on: December 28, 2011, 01:25:26 PM »
I am thinking of adding either a couple kayaks or a hard dinghy to my cruising equipment. Either of these options will increase my ability to explore when compared to that possible with my little inflatable dinghy.

I am curious about how others have safely secured a hard dink or two kayaks to the deck. Can you still work the boat safely? Any lessons learned that could help me? Other thoughts?

Thanks!

Sails and Canvas / Light air head sail
« on: August 10, 2011, 10:03:55 AM »
I've been thinking about adding a light air head sail to my inventory.  (Currently my largest head sail is a 7.2 ounce, 120 percent jib.)

What size and weight jib do others use in light air?  What do you use for down wind sails?

Thanks!

Engine and Drive Train / Repower Experiences
« on: July 01, 2011, 02:41:53 PM »
I am starting to evaluate repower options so that when the time comes, I have a sense of what may work. I have looked at the repower photos in the links but am eager to hear what lessons were learned.

I would appreciate hearing from others who have already replaced their engine....problems getting the old engine out, what engine did you choose, problems with the install, and how has the new engine performed (speed, fuel economy, noise, ease of maintenance....oil filter, fuel filter, water pump access, etc.).  Oh, and cost info if you are willing to share.

Thanks!
