Title: Starter
Post by: Coppifan on May 26, 2011, 07:33:14 AM
Looks like the starter has finally gone up on my Volvo Penta 23 HP. Hull #270.  I imagine new ones are not available. Can they be rebuilt? Where do I look? Any idea what this is going to cost?

The 23 HP Volvo that was put in the P323 was the MD11C.

I found the following info on it's starter:

Part Numbers:
    BOSCH 0-001-311-115
    PEUGEOT 5417601
    VOLVO 3803073,833669, 833031, 3803077,838060
    PRESTOLITE 20513568TBA

The Bosch, Peugeot, and Volvo units were OEM

Specs:
   Type:       DD
   Voltage:    12 Volts
   kW:         1.9 kW
   Rotation:   CCW
   Teeth/Splines:      11 Teeth/Splines
   Pinion/Splines OD:  29.8mm / 1.173in
Mounting Hole 1:    12.5mm ID Unthreaded
Mounting Hole 2:    12.5mm ID Unthreaded

There's a new 3rd party unit on sale on on ebay for $339.75 :

I also found this European site that has a good exploded view and lists
the Volvo part numbers:

And, of course, there's always the Volvo Online Store:

These can be rebuilt for about $115. I used Ace Armature In Providence, RI  Rebuild shops are everywhere. They will do with marine specs and components
