Title: P323 shaft struct
Post by: Lindinglgo on May 05, 2012, 10:23:00 AM
Hi P323 owners,

I bought a old P323 build in 77, thinking about cross pacific to Taiwan this year.
on the hull out, the struct of propeller shaft is corroded and pink, I can easily dig a whole with screw driver.

The boatyard say they can duplicate one for me using stainless steel but they didn't get the angle right and asking me to
re-glass the hull to make it fit :/
(and I still got a big gill on fabrication ;;)
The boatyard doesn't want to admit the struct is off angle, they say they can put it on.
But me and my mechanic tried whole day try to fit it without cutting the hull but it's not working :(
Since I can't use the struct they made as is, and I couldn't afford them to put it on for me.(might create more problem)

Does anyone know where to get a original struct for Pearson 323 ?

also, if anyone have some suggestion negotiating with boatyard that'll be great

You should talk to the people at: http://www.drmarine.com/categories.asp
I believe they bought all the design rights to Pearson Yachts and have many original Pearson parts in stock. Perhaps they can suggest something on the Strut?

I think if you paid a marina for such design services they certainly have an obligation to deliver. I guess it depends on how far you want to push your claim.  I would speak with the owner.

Good luck
Nick

The strut is "off angle" on purpose.  Since the 323 has a skeg hung rudder, the skeg would be an obstacle in removing the prop shaft.  Therefore, the strut is "off angle" so the shaft can be removed if necessary.

You'll find under the strut mounting holes (you must remove the fuel tank to access the fasteners) inside the pocket the strut lays into is a fiberglass wafer. This piece is really an adapter used by the factory to make up for differences in the bronze casting manufacture. You may be able to grind the wafer to custom fit your new strut. Or fabricate a new wafer from roving and resin to make the strut fit.

It's not necessary remove the fuel tank.  You can get to them from the cockpit lockers if you remove the perfboard "walls"  in the stern.  Tight but doable.

i just picked up a 1980 323. we're looking it over for issues and we think the shaft and strut look like they're a little off center, which we assume means "bent". however, from the conversation here, i'm hoping that this is "as designed". is the shaft/strut for this boat intended to not line up exactly down the middle of the bottom of the boat? thanks for any insight. First, congratulations on your purchase, and welcome to the forum!  May your 323 give you many years of happy sailing!  What hull number did you purchase?

As for the shaft & strut, fear not!  It's exactly as designed.
The reason for the offset angle is the full skeg.  There would be no way to remove or reinstall the shaft from the outside if it were lined up down the center, even with the rudder removed.  You would have to remove the motor and take it out from the inside!  Fortunately, this is not the case.

Thank you very much. Our hull number is 265. she's getting (hopefully) moved up to our new marina in Jersey City NJ today. knowing that the shaft is offset is such a relief. i really appreciate that information. NOW, all we have to do is give this volvo penta a good tuning/overhaul, scrape and paint the hull, fix a slightly damaged (Sandy) Port side rub rail, step and rig the mast, check the electrical system, all the pumps and wires and lights, add some new nav equipment, and... we'll be at sea in NO TIME!
