Ports & Hatches / Re: Portlight Rebedding
« on: August 02, 2017, 03:50:19 AM »
Wow, so I've finally removed all of my fixed salon portlights. It was very interesting to work. Biggest thing to learn is that Goo Gone is amazing. It totally liquefies the silicone.

It seems like maybe the hull flexed though, I think I'm going to have to grind down a 1/8 inch to get the frames back in again.

Ports & Hatches / Portlight Rebedding
« on: July 31, 2017, 02:40:16 PM »
So I'm starting to rebed my portlight and I've read all the good project pages people have put up.

People in general seem to think it's a really good idea to fill in the gap (where there is one) between the headliner and the cabin top.

To me, it looks like if you used a generous amount of butyl tape around the outside lip of the portlight you wouldn't need to mess with the gaps at all.

Has anyone rebedded using butyl tape alone?

Was so fun passing and beating all the newer boats! Especially the Catalinas!

We double-handed and took 6th place out of 18 boats with my old sails, jammed traveler, no whisker pole, and duct tape on the mast!

Next year we try harder!

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Wiring question
« on: May 01, 2016, 02:57:27 PM »
I feel ignorant asking this, but I'm having trouble understanding the DC wiring on my 323... this is probably made more complicated by the fact that the PO made a couple of wiring "gloms" that make it appear voodoo.

So, one question to start, how are the lights wired on one side of the boat? Is it the positive side of the loop that goes through the breaker panel? Are they wired in serial (seems unlikely to me)? I think if I could understand the specific wiring containing: the battery, a single breaker, and three cabin lights, I could apply that knowledge more generally.

So much for my two years of vocational electronics in high school :/

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Any advice for cable pulling?
« on: May 01, 2016, 02:52:04 PM »
As part of the mast pull/step rebuild, I replaced the lights and added electronic instruments... new LED spreader lights, Steaming light, Anchor light, and a Maretron WSO100 wind meter.

Now I need to run some new wiring behind the starboard side salon... any advice for pulling the NMEA 2000 cable and additional power cables through that area?

Thanks,
John Speck

General Discussion / Re: Busted up P323

I've been to Blue Pelican. It's cool, but very limited selection. I love the idea of going to some sort of "boat graveyard" and pulling parts like a junk yard.... I maybe read that there were some of these in the Sacremento area, but haven't actually visited them yet. :) I'm guessing these are more common on the east coast.

It could easily be worth the price of a ticket to fly to the east coast if I could get some replacement hatches, etc..  :)

I will let people know if I find anything!

Cruising / Re: any suggestions for chartering in Curacao?

Might try to private boat shares/charters. I think a lot of people are reluctant to do all the paperwork for just a day or two. :)

There are some nice parts there... is there a pick and pull boat dumpyard anywhere in California that anyone knows of?

Mast and Spar Issues / Replacing Mast Sheaves
« on: January 26, 2016, 04:39:08 PM »
Hi,

I'm getting my mast pulled as part of the work at the yard and I'm wondering if anyone has any part numbers for sheaves that would replace the original sheaves? I've switched to all rope halyards and I believe the old ones were meant for wire + rope so it should make the rigging easier!

Thanks in advance,
John Speck

Engine and Drive Train / Re: MD11C saga continues (aka need new engine)
« on: January 08, 2016, 03:13:20 PM »
Saga update.

I have purchased:
- Beta 25 with a Hurth ZF 15 MIV transmission
- Upgraded 75 amp alternator for the Beta 25 (probably overkill)
- New prop shaft, cutlass bearing, coupler for the Hurth

Current project status:
- Got a tow to SF Boatworks from Vessel Assist. Was free because I have BoatUS gold towing which sure seems like a good deal.
- I had already disconnected most of the connections to the engine myself. I then undid all the bolts that go in to the stringers. Getting the last two bolts out on the port aft side required me to remove my batteries from my battery box, lay down in the port sail locker and reach way down to the stringers. I used the fuel tank as a place to my tools :)
- I put cardboard on the cabin floor followed with a layer of plywood and an extra sheet of thick plywood just by the engine compartment. I also cut a number of 2" x 6" beams of about 2' in length to use as props, wedges, etc.
- A SF Boatworks mechanic lifted the old engine out with a crane. Took about 3 hours. All of the plywood and small blocks of wood came in very handy.
- We tried to muscle the prop shaft coupler off but it wasn't budging and we didn't have a puller the right size. I asked him to just cut the shaft since I had no plan to try and sell my old one. It turns out it would have been easier had I left the prop attached to the transmission since they say they could have just yanked it off the coupler. I'm happy with how this turned out though.
- Per the mechanic's reccommendation I ordered a new shaft, but unkeyed and in a longer size than I need to use as a "blank." In this case it's 66". I'm waiting for that to arrive.
- This weekend I get to clean the engine compartment and paint it!

Engine and Drive Train / Re: Prop shaft length
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:57:37 PM »
Prop shaft on my boat was per the spec in the parts list, 59.5" and 1 and 1/8th" in diameter.

Getting a longer one made now so that it can go through the new transmission.

Was reading this article: http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/magazine/2016/january/lightning-protection-on-recreation-watercraft.asp?utm_source=SWMAG&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=swmag_art1_0116

Since the P323 has an aluminum mast, is keel stepped, and has a lead hull it sounds like you could pretty easily bolt some copper or bronze strips to the keel since it's lead fille and put a lightning rod on top of the mast and you'd be done.

Too straightforward? Do the mast step bolts really go down in to the lead of the keel?

Thanks,
John Speck

Maybe I'll try sending it to Garhauer when I send them my traveler track...
