Title: Original Mast Manufacturer
Post by: Dulcinea on March 16, 2012, 05:42:35 PM
Does anyone know who manufactured the mast for the P323 circa 1978?  I've done some research and think it might have been either MetalMast or Sound Spars, maybe both.  Anyone have any experience with Dwyer?  I am thinking of having them make a new mast for my boat next year.  Appreciate any comments you may have.

I'm curious as to why you need a new mast.

Fairly certain they used the Metalmast oval section spars.  They may still be
available through Rig Rite:

Ed:  I agree but the Rig Rite data lists their #7348 as being for the 323, but it isn't an oval like the one in my boat.  In the end, it may not matter mush as long as the dimensions are compatible with boat.

But the 7348 is in the MetalMast's Performance series.  They didn't start to phase out the Traditional series and replace it with the Performance series until the mid 80's, which would have only affected the very last of the 323's production run.

Since Dulcinea is a 1978, it has the Traditional series mast.

At one point, I took a tracing and made measurements to determine the exact model #, but when I went to look for it I couldn't find it.

I'll post it when I do.

I tried measuring the mast this weekend, but didn't have any calipers big enough, so I tried to eyeball it.

By eye, I got 7 1/2" x 4 1/2".   The closest match on the Rig-Rite site is the
Sound Spars SS-7747, which is 7 3/4" x 4 3/4".   The mast boot and mast
collars for the SS-7747 claim they were used on the Pearson 323.

I re-measured my mast, using a big clamp as a caliper, and got 7 3/4" x 4 3/4".

So it looks like mine, at least, is an SS-7747.

I agree.  That looks like it.
