Plumbing and Galley Systems / Re: What was this for?

I found hand pumping the icebox to be tedious, so i installed a small diaphragm pump and a strainer inline.

If you look in the bilge beneath the post you will notice that there is nothing under it to transmit load to the hull, so the post is not structural, it is simply sitting on the sole. That being said, a 40 year old boat can use all the help it can get.

Sails and Canvas / Re: P323 What size Genoa works best?

I used a 140 in the Summer in New England and a 110 in the Spring and Fall. If I was feeling lazy or motorsailing into the wind I'd reef the 110 to 90 and use the spinnaker pole as a jib boom.

As you can see I mounted it horizontally between the shelf and starboard wall of the icebox, just used four screws and standoff. I did install the optional door but I don't have a photo of that.

I may have some photos of the fridge banging around somewhere, I'll check.

If this is solely a house bank and you have a separate battery to start your engine I would parallel all four. The batteries will last longer if they are not cycled as deeply.

Ok, I'll make this as simple as I can. If you are insulting and demanding you are not usually going to get assistance from people.

Steering System, Hull Structure / Re: bildge winter water?

Yup, I'm with Last Resort. I'm in Ct., pull the mast, shrinkwrap, vacuum the bilge, dump in antifreeze, run it through both bilge pumps, then vacuum again. Home Depot sells a cheap wet vac for $25 they call "Bucket head". You have to buy a 5 gal. bucket too. It's perfect for the job, and is great for pumping out the dinghy. It's also good for pumping up the dinghy.

There is a foam that's used for around windows that does not expand as much.you can buy it at home depot. I believe it's Great Stuff for Windows.

Kathy is on a ball at Block Island for the summer, I asked her to make an hourly record of solar output for a day with our 360 watt system. It averaged 10 amps/hour over 13 hours with cloudy skies. Our house bank of 3 size 29 batteries gives us 380 reserve capacity (630 reserve capacity × 0.6) and we normally use 80-120 amps over 24 hours. This includes using 25 amps for the water heater for one hour. One battery is in the stern with the starter battery, the other two are mounted on top of the keel. There is an 1800 watt inverter on board so there are movies every night for the grandkids (blu ray or netflix using my cellphone for wifi), a microwave, and all the other assorted electronic devices that need charging. I have a  Honda generator but haven't carried it on board for years, never need it. With this setup power is never a concern.

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet I can tell you what I did, maybe it will help. I have two solar panels above the Bimini rated at 360 watts total and an isotherm air cooled fridge system model 2501. I did not add insulation, I felt the original 2" was plenty. The o shaped evaporator will make ice and the box will chill below 40° using 40-60 ah per day. My house bank is three size 29 batteries. The fridge accounts for about a 10% battery drain overnight. The wife and granddaughters account for another 15%. On a typical new England summer day we are fully charged by 11 am. I installed a dual voltage water heater element in my 6 gal. Raritan (300 watt 12v/500 watt 120v) to utilize the excess solar capacity while giving the girls hot showers every evening.

Ports & Hatches / Re: Portlight Rebedding
« on: August 03, 2017, 09:09:41 AM »
I rebedded my fixed ports last year with butyl rubber,  did not worry about the gap, still no leaks. I use butyl rubber for pretty much everything on deck with good results. Pearson used double sided foam tape on the ports originally and that seal isn't where my ports leaked, it was at the glass gasket.

I bought these this Spring, look just like the original incandescents, but a bit brighter. A nice warm light.

Sails and Canvas / Re: Mainsail on the shrouds
« on: July 28, 2015, 10:30:04 PM »
Out haul is fine, you want some belly in the sail going downwind, the more drag the better. Going wing and wing is a slow point of sail, but fun, that being said you'd gain a knot or so if you poled out the jib. I never let my main sit on the shrouds.

Yup, it is ethanol resistant, but that isn't a worry with diesel. Hack saw should do the trick.
