Ports & Hatches / Re: Happy Holidays to my fellow 323 Enthusiasts!
« on: December 28, 2014, 12:01:22 AM »
And a Very Happy New Year to you all !   In the summer of 2014 I did my first extended trip with Chelsea-500 statute miles on Lake Michigan from Muskegon, MI to Gladstone, MI crossing the lake twice-in fog both ways.  I didn't know fog and wind could exist at the same time.  Now I know.. Radar was installed shortly there after as I plan on an even longer trip the summer of 2015 again on Lake Michigan but going to Beaver Island on the north end of the lake.
The best to all !

Engine and Drive Train / Re: Fuel Gauge
« on: September 16, 2014, 04:31:58 PM »
How such a simple question can go on... it's fun.

On Chelsea I opened the port last summer and took out the gauge.  I cleaned the glass on it and reset it into the tank.  It's a simple magnetic unit with a cork on the end in the tank.  As the fuel lowers, so does the cork.  As it goes down, the magnetic force lessons and the gauge needle goes from full to empty.  When I opened the tank I had run the blower for a while. I disconnected shore power, set the 12v to off and said a prayer.  Once the gauge was out, I covered/stuffed the open hole with a plug and put up a no smoking sign on the dock head.... I'm still here.

Now I can read it well but the cover plate on mine as well was well marred from years of shoes and who knows what.  Using "Cleaner Wax" and some #7 rubbing compound I buffed out the surface of the cover plate to a wonderful shine.  Also washed off the bottom of it and the top of the gauge cover.  No sight problems reading the gauge.
Full is to port, 3/4 is forward. 1/2 is starboard and if it's toward the helm, get ready to swim with flippers for propulsion.  I carry 30 gallons of fuel (A4-gas) when full and burn 1.1 gal per hour at 7 knots no matter the wind... well with a 15 knot headwind it's 1.3 gal per hour.. hope this helps.

Plumbing and Galley Systems / Re: relocate shower sump
« on: September 16, 2014, 02:55:25 PM »
Eddy,
I believe the sump is integral to the boat. That is, the base of the sump is the top of the bilge. There would be no reason you could not move it but it will have the pump work harder to evacuate the water from the sump.  I replaced the Jabsco pump this summer but did not test the draw for length or lift.  It pumps efficiently so you should have no issues.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Re: Fender Problem
« on: May 22, 2014, 11:26:54 PM »
I have the fenders attached to the dock and Chelsea caresses them gently and never nears touching.  Works great !  (we have floating docks 24 inches above the water) and no tide.....

Steering System, Hull Structure / Re: Cradle

A bit more on cradles.  When I purchased Chelsea she was in Chicago and I boat out of Muskegon, MI.  I sailed her up and picked up the cradle in a 6x12 foot open trailer from U-Haul.  It slipped right in (with a fork lift) being cautious of the weight.  And forked off at the marina.
The yard likes cradles as they can move boats easily if they need to.

Do you need more accurate measurements? If so let me know and I can photograph it this weekend and take more detailed measurements.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Pearson Logo on cabin house
« on: April 29, 2014, 12:29:39 AM »
Hello, Would any of you have a good Pearson 323 logo on your cabin house that you could photograph for me?  I would like to have mine redone and with electronic printing to vinyl being what it is; if I can get a good photograph I can get a good replica.
Please let me know if you can accomodate.
Thanks,
Lauri

If you want measurements and pictures of a cradle I would be happy to measure/photograph the one for Chelsea.  In Lake Michigan we use cradles often and it's very easy for the boat yard to haul.  The bring boat & cradle to the haul out and lift boat with carry lift.  Saves running all around the yard with the slowest most expensive equipment.  The base is 6x12 feet and it's steel I beam construction.  The photo attached was about April 1.  It was a LONG winter.. Global warming is not evident this year.

Note, there are five "I-Beams" that make up the base, two long stringers (12 ft) front to back.  On the three center beams there is a flat plate for the keel to rest on.  Two angled supports for the corner stanchions.  These rest just behind the lift points for haul out.  I can get the corner heights off this weekend if the rain and wind stops.  I'm 3 hours from the boat.

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Re: Tiny Tach
« on: February 14, 2014, 12:46:31 AM »
I don't know what size you consider "Tiny" but this is a link to one I purchased and put on Chelsea last summer.

She does have an atomic 4 not diesel.  I believe the same tach works on diesel.  When I get back on board in March I can check the materials from the box.  Too much snow to get to her now... An effect of Lake Michigan.

As for the original gauges, Chelsea's seem to remain working well.  I did clean and rebed the fuel gauge last summer now I just have to learn to read it right... oops !  thought she was running out but was 3/4 full...

Boat Handling / Re: Quick question
« on: January 24, 2014, 03:06:14 PM »
Ron,
Welcome to the Pearson 323 world.  It's a great ride.
On Chelsea # 166, when on the hard people were telling me I had an issue with the prop shaft being twisted and off center.  With a Skeg Rudder, if the shaft went straight back, you would have to pull the motor to pull the shaft, not practical.  So if you look under Cheslea, the shaft comes about 1 inch off center as it exits the hull.  I do have Port side prop walk and with the RT hand prop, makes it double.  The instructions in the first reply are gospel.  Also, if your trans is not engaging well in reverse, remember that you have to hold it in gear going backward.  This is a friction system and your arm on the lever is the total friction.  There is relatively simple adjustment in the gear box for increasing the ability of the bands to reverse.  It's much like the original transmission on a Ford Model T.  IT had no clutch, just a forward, reverse and stop pedals.
Good Luck, If you have any plans to come over to Lake Michigan, let me know, Pearson Friends always welcome aboard..

Exterior Finish and Fiberglass / Re: Paint bottom
« on: November 23, 2012, 09:57:02 PM »
Hello RH,
I have been told by a yard up north on Lake MI that the paint makers warranty only is valid if the boat goes in the water within 30 days of paint date.  There is no known issue in painting in fall and launching in spring with the exception that the weather beats on it in our snow country along with the chemical rains in Chicago..

Sails and Canvas / Re: National Sail and Far East Sail
« on: September 19, 2012, 10:08:48 AM »
Hello Eddy,
I have just purchased a new main from FX sails and am very satisfied with performance and construction.  It was about three weeks for manufacture and delivery.  Fits well, sails great but I did have to add lazy jacks to single hand the new sail as it sure has more life then the old baggy one...

Boat Handling / Re: Interested in a 323, how does it handle in light wind?
« on: September 18, 2012, 12:55:42 PM »
Hello Frag, I'm a relatively newbee with my P323 having added "Chelsea" a year ago on the 19th.  This past weekend on Muskegon Lake (Adjoins Lake Michigan) we were sailing with 5 knot winds wing on wing and going 3.5 knots passing others with no problem and we weren't racing.. just cruising.  She has a 150% Genoa and a new Main full batten from FX Sails.  (Great new sail)
I went to the P323 from a Coronado 27 and enjoy the size and sailing ability she affords.  Have been in 8 foot seas on Lake Michigan and very comfortable.
If any other questions please let me know.
