Engine and Drive Train / alternator belt squeal.

Good evening my intrepid Pearson peer group.

Last year I had an issue where the alternator belt would squeal between 1800 and 2100 rpm. I had the unit rebuilt over the winter and installed it yesterday. I replaced the belt because the other belt was coming apart, anyway, I still have the squeal problem. The alignment seems good, so, I am stumped.

Does anyone have any recommendations in this regard?

I would not be able to install the composting head and still have an operational sink , so the head smell will continue.

Hi Johnny,

I was looking for the Halyard size for your boat and came across the following Website. You may have it, but it could be a resource for 303's.

I did not find the halyard size. My 323 requires 7/16 to 3/16 wire with mast head sheaves. I put the 323 parts catalogue below as it may be useful to you. the boats are only some 2,000 lbs different, so, I can't see why the halyard sizes would be different, though I do not know if you mast head sheaves. The photo looks like it's block, but you will need to determine that.

I appreciate your reply. I'll have the mast pulled and then have all six made, plus the back stay. I pulled up one of the covers today and found rust below the deck cover plate. I'ts time.

Once I pull the mast and replace the rigging in a month or so I plan on using a poured mast wedge style system. I'll let you know if that helps.

I appreciate the advice. Can you let me know where you purchased the rigging? I am getting wild price swings. I'd rather go with a known supplier than throw a dart at the internet and hope for the best.

Did you also replace the chainplates?

Hello all,

I am considering changing the rigging, it's perhaps 40 odd years old. I did not find any corrosion or broken wires at deck level, but have yet to go up the mast. I am considering pre-stretched or heat treated Dyneema, or similar product, regular swage and SS wire, or perhaps Norsman style fittings. I've ruled out the old galvanized wire methods.

Does anyone have any experience they could share in this regard?

Hi,

I was at the boat yesterday afternoon working on yet another project, installing a Gas Vapor alarm and blower control. Basically, if there are gas fumes, it sounds an alarm and turns on the blower. I think its a great safety install. Anyway, it was rather windy and I heard the mast pumping and vibrating throughout the boat. I've read the articles posted on the subject, but can not find any guidelines published by Pearson related to Standing rigging tension adjustments. I will not tune the rig on the hard, because it will change the minute its back in the water and the pumping could just be boat deformity on the hard which will go away once launched. However, I was wondering if there were any published guides on tension, other than 10-20% of breaking strength.

Any advice would be helpful.

I am thinking of taking the smelly tank and head out and replacing it with a Composting head. The tolerances in my 323 seem to limit what I can install. Does anyone have any experience, ideas or suggestions related to the head itself as well as the installation?

Sorry that happened to you and that  I do not have any information the spreader, but I would like to ask if you are willing to share, what it cost to replace the standing rigging as mine is questionable? My rig is a concern that I've been having for a while now. I have also been thinking of Dyneema, but am uncertain about the materials and stretching.

Hi everyone,

I really appreciate the information. In order to change the cutlass bearing in my boat I need to pull the shaft. It may pay to change the strut rather than pulling the shaft every few years, as that is a real PIA and the shaft requires realignment afterward.

I'll check with D&R Marine to see what they offer. I plan to keep this boat for the next 10 years or so.
