Deck Mounted Hardware / Re: the pearson 323 companionway
« on: March 11, 2021, 09:54:31 AM »
I find going down the companion way concerning with large waves.
I'm contemplating some sort of hand hold but have not come up with how to do it yet.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Re: Running lines aft on 323
« on: March 03, 2021, 03:46:19 PM »
I can think of 2 possibilities.

Put backing plates under headliner and through bolt. Will need to make as nice as possible. At least it's not in a spot where I'm likely to hit my head on fasteners.

Or embed into the deck some sort of stainless insert. If one removes as much core as possible with a allen wrench and fill with high strength filler thin enough to flow it can be very strong. Suspect if it failed it would pull  big chunks of deck out. Done it and it's a bit tricky to do as alignment needs to be pretty much perfect.  Would look better but is it strong enough?

Deck Mounted Hardware / Running lines aft on 323

Thinking  of running some lines aft on 323.

Think I have most of it figured out but am stumped on how to mount winch and clutches on the aft part of the cabin top.
The inner liner does not appear to be removable.
How have others mounted hardware in that area?

Thanks to both of you for the feedback..
I moved it yesterday.
Kept the extra  toggle in and at least for now was unable to loosen the lock nut on the furlers turnbuckle.
Added to mast rake a bit but think it's OK.
Also moved the furling line from starboard to port to make anchoring saner.
Will attack the lock nut aging with better tools and add a little penetrating oil.

This  fall removed the mast ant when I put it back up attached to the normal forward most chain plate position.
Problem was the furler did not exit in the correct position.
Checked an old photo and saw it on the second from most aft hole.
Put it back where is was.
The attached photo pretty well tells the story.
Notice that the furler "turnbuckle" is screwed most of the way in and there is an extra toggle..

Want to change the furling line to port as it's in the way when anchoring.
Thinking of moving forstay to the forward position when I make the change.
I can't think of any reason to have it as it is.
Can anyone think of a reason to leave it?

If  I move forstay as is to the forward position it will move the top of the mast back a little.
Any recommendations on mast rake?

Thanks for any input.

Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Re: Internal Halyards
« on: October 05, 2017, 10:54:03 AM »
I know this is a very old topic but it's exactly what I'm interested in....
Anybody do the conversion?
Is there anything in the original wiring and hardware that needs modification?
Mostly want main and jib internal but spinnaker would be nice.
How does one do the spinnaker internal?
Is the lead from the internal sheave to the block on the spinnaker crane satisfactory?
Any opinions on running the topping lift  internal?

Deck Mounted Hardware / Windlass
« on: September 12, 2017, 04:16:15 PM »
I'm contemplating a windlass.
I can git it up but usually rather sore for about a day thereafter :-(
Looks like an expensive and rather complicated project.
Normally I would only consider a manual windlass but there is not that much available anymore.
Anyone know anything about the new Lewmar vx1?
http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1&id=3585115
Do you think the 500 watt version for 5/16 chain is good enough?
Any suggestions?

Engine and Drive Train / Re: MD11C fuel filter
« on: May 21, 2017, 10:11:40 PM »
Thanks I'll find some.
Had a friend help.
Pulled the bracket and found the gasket stayed in place if the grove it perfectly clean including any fuel.
Easier said than done.
Anyone change to a different filter?

Engine and Drive Train / MD11C fuel filter
« on: May 20, 2017, 08:46:39 AM »
I'm replacing the inert  of the canister fuel filter mounted on the engine.
I can't seem to be able get the gasket to stay in place as I put it in place.
I can barely get it to stay in place in the grove in the top housing  with a few fingers and as soon as I pull my fingers out it falls out of place.
Made 5 failed attempts so far.
Any tips?

Good to know.
With those crazy volvo prices need to shop.
I ordered some stuff from keypart.

In the UK also. Prices are good and shipping was reasonable and fast.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Re: Working jib sheeting angle
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:52:44 AM »
I think because of the the hull shape it's not going to point as good as a racer but think it can do a lot better.
I think the biggest problem it has is sail trim.
Can't sail close to the wind if you can't trim the sails.
Even my 150% is not quite right but it's at least close.
Pulling the clue inboard a bit until the sail comes close to the spreader tip would help, but that’s another  issue.

Sail maker suggested also to attach to cabin top rail in a light wind.
The only easy spot I can see to attach track or pad eye is a little inboard of the cabin top rail.
I think it will make heavy weather handling a lot easier inside the shrouds.
I'd probably just run sheet  from the cabin top block to the outer track block for now.
At first looked at the deck close to the cabin top but don't see an easy way to access underneath.

I'm still on the hard so will be a few weeks before I can try anything.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Working jib sheeting angle
« on: May 02, 2017, 09:49:30 PM »
Have a working jib that I want to use during the windier times of year.
With the track on the rail the sheeting angle will not allow sailing close to the wind.
Have the same issue when deeply reefing the 150% jib.
I'm thinking of putting a short track on the cabin top.
Peeking under the headliner looks like I can get a track about 28" from centerline.
Should give about an 8 degree sheeting angle.
Anyone try this?
Any thoughts?

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Re: Shorepower inlet.
« on: January 26, 2017, 11:06:00 AM »
It's rather challenging to trace the routing of the wire from the inlet to the fuses.
From what I can tell it goes down from the inlet, Goes under the cockpit sole and goes forward  a few inches in along the starboard side.
Then it follows the bullhead to the fuses.
From my measurements it's under 10' to the fuses and  a couple feet shorter to the new panel.

So far have removed old switch and outlet and have cut in new outlet box and hole for panel.
Temporarily removed manual bilge pump to improve access from back.
Really challenging cutting some of the cable ties.
They must have put them in when the boat was only partially assembled.

Have traced out all the ac wires other then neutral and ground for water heater.
Hope they will be more obvious after pulling the other wires from the old ac panel.

Should be able to move wires to new panel soon.
Attached is photo of new panel.
It's not screwed in so it's a little low in the hole.

I think I read somewhere that  that beta has a way to attach to a walter v drive.
I think it's pretty new.
My certainty on this is not that high :-(
I'd talk to Beta and Walter about it.
