Engine and Drive Train / alternator belt squeal.
« on: April 11, 2022, 11:10:08 PM »
Good evening my intrepid Pearson peer group.

Last year I had an issue where the alternator belt would squeal between 1800 and 2100 rpm. I had the unit rebuilt over the winter and installed it yesterday. I replaced the belt because the other belt was coming apart, anyway, I still have the squeal problem. The alignment seems good, so, I am stumped.

Does anyone have any recommendations in this regard?

All the best,

Greg

General Discussion / Standing rigging
« on: March 08, 2022, 10:44:38 AM »
Hello all,

I am considering changing the rigging, it's perhaps 40 odd years old. I did not find any corrosion or broken wires at deck level, but have yet to go up the mast. I am considering pre-stretched or heat treated Dyneema, or similar product, regular swage and SS wire, or perhaps Norsman style fittings. I've ruled out the old galvanized wire methods.

Does anyone have any experience they could share in this regard?

Thank you,

Greg

General Discussion / Mast Pumping on the Hard
« on: March 08, 2022, 10:40:08 AM »
Hi,

I was at the boat yesterday afternoon working on yet another project, installing a Gas Vapor alarm and blower control. Basically, if there are gas fumes, it sounds an alarm and turns on the blower. I think its a great safety install. Anyway, it was rather windy and I heard the mast pumping and vibrating throughout the boat. I've read the articles posted on the subject, but can not find any guidelines published by Pearson related to Standing rigging tension adjustments. I will not tune the rig on the hard, because it will change the minute its back in the water and the pumping could just be boat deformity on the hard which will go away once launched. However, I was wondering if there were any published guides on tension, other than 10-20% of breaking strength.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you,

Greg

Plumbing and Galley Systems / Composting Head
« on: March 01, 2022, 09:04:42 PM »
Hi All,

I am thinking of taking the smelly tank and head out and replacing it with a Composting head. The tolerances in my 323 seem to limit what I can install. Does anyone have any experience, ideas or suggestions related to the head itself as well as the installation?

Best regards,

Greg

General Discussion / 1978 Pearson 323 Gel Coat color
« on: May 18, 2021, 11:23:18 PM »
Hello all,

I need to make a few gel coat repairs to some scrapes and dings on the hull. Does anyone know what color the hull is and who may sell the closest matching paint. I understand that the color is photo reactive and UV changes the color, however, starting with the right base and tinting up with white can help achieve a better match.

Best regards to all.

Engine and Drive Train / Bronze Prop Shaft Problems
« on: May 05, 2021, 05:59:33 PM »
I have a 1978 Pearson 323 with a bronze shaft and prop. I have noticed that my shaft looks splotchy. meaning yellowish and pinkish discoloration which appears to be dezincification of the shaft. The question is whether I need to replace the shaft, or is it okay to run. My fear is that the shaft will sheer under load and cause some major problems, like coming through the hull, ripping out the stern tube or such. I think I already have my answer but thought to ask in the event that I am overreacting here.

If anyone has any experience in this area, please reply.

Thank you,

Greg.

General Discussion / 1978 Pearson 323 cutless bearing replacement
« on: March 22, 2021, 09:51:07 PM »
Good evening my fellow intrepid captains.

I am having an issue with my cutless bearing. My boat has a 1 1/8 bronze shaft going into a bronze strut. I purchased a strut-pro tool but the collets are too large and will not fit between the shaft and the strut.

Has anyone in this forum replaced their cutless bearing without removing the shaft, which looks like a major PIA, if yes, how did you do it and what size bearing goes back into it? If you made a tool, did you take photos of same? I did check the forum before buying the bearing and think that I have the right bearing, but getting the old one out is becoming an issue.

Any assistance would be great.

Thank you all,

New Member Introductions / Dyneema or other synthetic standing rigging
« on: February 26, 2021, 03:37:48 PM »
Hi,

I have a 1978 P-323, and the standing rigging looks, well original. I am thinking of replacing it but am in between wire and synthetic. I was wondering if anyone in the forum has any recent experience in this area?

Best regards,

Greg

For Sale and Wanted / Wanted 323, 1978 atomic 4 15/8 three blade prop
« on: January 13, 2021, 05:33:03 PM »
Hi,

I am looking for a prop for a 1978 323, Atomic 4 Gas engine, 1 1/8 shaft boat. I believe it is 15/8 Left hand but that may be incorrect. Any help would be appreciated.

Happy New Year and stay safe.

My name is Greg and I just love the Pearson 323. I owned my last 323 for 14 years and she had a partial sinking and battery fire, it was time to let her go. I am on the second one that I purchased on September 15th. She's on the hard and I am loving her with some refit projects. It's my first Atomic 4 so there is a definite learning curve with that engine, but I am finding it is a solid performer and easy to work on. I am adding the following to this boat:

1) A new pressure water system.
2) New Hot Water Heater.
3) New Thruhulls, (Bronze).
4) Updating the instruments and chart plotter.
5) Adding a new Sea Strainer.

I am thinking of converting the icebox to a fridge unit, but am having trouble figuring out how many Cf it is. If anyone can help me and answer this question I'd be very grateful.

I'll post some photos when I can figure out how that works.

Bless you, all, and have a great day.

Greg
