Exterior Finish and Fiberglass / Re: General Painting thread (P26)
« on: November 28, 2018, 01:45:53 PM »
The deck on my boat is in rough shape. There is one place on the forepeak starboard side where the gelcoat is worn away. The rest of the gelcoat in the cockpit coach roof etc is really chalky/faded. I've tried several times to revive it but haven't had much luck. I've got the boat on the hard for the winter I'm rebedding all the deck hardware, hatches etc. I'm going to redo the nonskid probably with kiwi grip. Any thoughts or advice on restoring the gelcoat or painting? Thanks.

This is several months old but wanted to share as I have the lectrasan on my boat. For this to work properly in anything other than water with a high salinity like actual seawater you'll have to inject a brine solution to get enough salt for it to work correctly. If you don't have enough salt not only does it not sanitize the waste it will cause the electrode pack to fail. This is a hassle as it takes quite a bit of brine in the Chesapeake.
I'm considering the airhead to replace this .. has anyone used a composting head that could provide some insight on how well they actually work? I've spoken to one person who bought a boat with one installed and they weren't happy with it and ended up replacing with a holding tank arrangement. It was a large catamaran and they were a family of 4 with frequent guests so not really a fair test with that many people on board.

Dragging this back up I was wondering if you could provide a review on the total boat paint you're using? I need to paint as well. Thanks

Sails and Canvas / Re: Measurements for used asymmetrical
« on: October 26, 2018, 12:33:51 PM »
I'm looking at used sails and I see Minneys has a used tri radial listed in VGC the luff is 41'8" .. is that going to be too long? It doesn't list the leech foot is 24'10". It's inventory # S 15-013.

Thanks, are you using a sock to set and douse? My boat came with a symmetrical and has fittings on the aft quarter to attach turning blocks to lead the sheets to the winches .. it has primary winches but no secondaries. I was hoping to be able to tack it on the anchor roller did you have problems doing it that way? The weight of the fabric determines the wind strength? So a .75 ounce would be for light air up to 10kn and above there you'd want the heavier 1.5?

Sails and Canvas / Measurements for used asymmetrical
« on: October 25, 2018, 11:15:15 AM »
I know nothing about measurements for Spinnaker's. I'd like to try a used asymmetrical to see if it's something I can manage. I have blocks/sheets for a symmetrical thinking I could probably use those. Does anyone know what measurements would work? I don't have the bow sprit so my thought was to tack to the anchor roller. Any information/thoughts appreciated.

Steering System, Hull Structure / Re: Rudder removal

I decided to let the rudder play ride for now. Got a second opinion and they felt like the play was acceptable and didn't warrant removal at this time.

I see several members were in the process of installing a composting head but didn't see any posts on how they were working
I'm interested in updates I was thinking of converting to one.

How does the shoe come off? Are you able to just drop it down once unbolted? I was going to ask the yard to sling the boat when ready to remove .. is that not a good idea?

Has anyone removed their rudder? I have play in the pintle/gudgeon. Boat is on the hard for the winter. I've had the bottom stripped of paint and letting it dry until spring. Thanks

Deck Mounted Hardware / Re: Teak Coaming replacement
« on: November 30, 2016, 09:41:25 AM »
Hi I know this is an older post but I would try to keep the coaming teak. If you remove it the gelcoat will not match due to weathering.

Engine and Drive Train / Re: 323 Repower
« on: August 05, 2016, 03:08:23 PM »
Mine had been repowered by the original owner. He bought the Westerbeke direct replacement for the atomic 4. It's a marinized Kubota (Beta) v850 4 cylinder diesel. Mine has a hurth v drive. The divider between engine panel and cabinet door was cut. If pictures would help let me know and I can snap some next time I'm down.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Re: Putting in new handrails
« on: August 05, 2016, 02:56:40 PM »
Hi not sure what you did but access to all but the forward 2 bolts is done by removing the headliner. I took your approach and drilled/filled the holes and tapped the holes. So far so good.

The fasteners are #10 or #12 stainless machine screws. This all started when I noticed the forward end of the handrail on starboard side was slightly raised. It won't fully tighten. I was thinking removing the headliner would allow me to get to the underside. Since it's machine screws there should be a nut?
