Engine and Drive Train / 3GM30 loses power
« on: June 24, 2014, 05:26:05 PM »
I was motorsailing, turning about 2000 RPM on a Yanmar3GM30.  Suddenly, the engine lost power.  It wasn't exactly missing but it wasn't delivering power.  I shut down and restarted but with the same symptoms and then wouldn't run at all.  A few days later, it started right up and ran with no problem.  The same thing had happened a earlier, maybe 50-75 motor hours earlier.  Any thoughts?

Is the rudder on the 323 foam cored or wood cored?

Mast and Spar Issues / Mast corrosion
« on: November 28, 2011, 09:54:04 PM »
We were on our way south from Brunswick, GA, close hauled in a 10-12 knot wind, just a bit after sunrise and somewhere off of Cape Canaveral.  THUD!  What the devil was that?  A quick look around and I decided that it was a "boat noise."  Later, going below to use the head, I noticed that the bilge cover between the mast and the head bulkhead was askew.  I've monitored the corrosion at the base of the mast, but apparently failed to notice how advanced it had become.  The bottom of the mast had moved forward a good inch!  So,drop the sails,  a few more hours to Ft Pierce, FL.  Tomorrow we will have the stick pulled, I will cut off the corroded section and shim up the step with starboard.  I will put a zinc at the base of the mast.

Ports & Hatches / Ports
« on: October 19, 2011, 08:06:30 AM »
Well, it's finally happened!  One of the ports on our P323 has developed a leak.  I guess it's time to rebed.  What can I expect when I remove the screws from the interior trim?  Do the screws go through the trim into the exterior trim?  Is there some kind of gasket between the interior and exterior?  I want to be prepared to fix the problem before I take things apart.

Sails and Canvas / Mainsail slugs
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:29:25 PM »
The bottom part of the luff on the main on Now or Never! is not attached to the mast directly with slugs.  Instead, the slugs are attached to a line that is threaded through the cringles on the main.  I really don't understand why this is.  Can anyone explain this to me?  The line gets hooked around the reefing hook when I raise the sail and prevents it from going up.  This is a nuisance since I then have to go forward to unsnag the line.  This kind of negates the reason for leading the halyard back to the cockpit.  Why couldn't I eliminate the line and attach the sail directly to the mast with slugs?
