I need to replace the jib furler line. it snapped last summer while under sail, so I did a quick emergency knotting. So, now is the time to replace it.
But when I look at the drum.... I have zero idea how to go about it.
There is no name on the drum so I don't know the model/maker.
I can't see any obvious bolts or screws to remove to get the housing off and I'm very reluctant to start tearing this thing apart.
Youtube and the net so far are not helping me figure this out.
I have to think some of you folks have been through this.
I attach the only photo I have of it. (please ignore the sleeping, seasick/hungover teenager in the forground). just enlarge the picture to see the drum details.

Seeking advice.

We are aiming to sail from our home port in Jersey City NJ out to Block Island, and if things are going well, another leg up to Nantucket. I'm seeking the wisdom of you obviously wise Pearson owners:
a. I'm not clear on whether i need to go up the east river, through hells gate and into Long Island sound, or if i head down to the bottom of Brooklyn, turn east and take the ocean route. Any suggestions?
b. between the tip of Montauk and Block Island, and between Block Island and Nantucket, i'm picking up a lot of online chat about currents, winds, etc. Looking for insight here as well.
c. if i DO take the ocean route, what can i expect as i round Montauk, especially if i need a break and decide to spend the night there?
d. Suggestions on good, sailboat friendly Marinas along the way?

Cruising / Pearson 323 out duels bigger boat in PHRF race

Not to BRAG or anything (polishing my knuckles on my suit jacket), but I thought my seafaring brothers and sisters would be happy (but unsurprised) to know that last evening we held our own as we pitted our 1980 323 against 2
J80s and a big shiny 40(ish)ft sailboat  in a our first sailing race ever. It was a PHRF race in NY Harbor. It was run by the Manhattan Yacht Club.
It was a ton of fun. We were last across the starting line.
The J80s took off and never looked back, being light and new and fast. the other boat (i'm guessing it was a 37-42') was ahead of us by several boat lengths at the gun. However, the winds were steady but not super strong which i guess played to our strength as a lighter boat and we started gaining ground. just before the first turn we tacked inside them and got around the buoy just upwind of their turn. From there it was into the wind and we really started making our move. The second buoy brought us back downwind and i thought our goose was cooked when i saw him break out the spinnaker. But luck was with us and they never got that monster sail working right and we limped through the 3rd buoy about 100 yards ahead.
In the end, we pulled away and beat him by a good 400 yards.
What a blast. All in best spirit of good will.
Great crew. Our skipper Alex is a serious sailor and knew how to get the best out of The Great Godsea.
I know this is old hat for all of you seasoned sailors, but for me, on my first boat, in my first race, the experience was one to be savored.
I'll bet you've all got taller tales to share and I'm ready to read them.

i'm trying to buy some replacement lights for the cabin. i googled the stock number from the base of the bulbs i have and got the following supplier.

NY/NJ is finally getting a little break from the deep freeze we've been living in for most of 2015. Stopped by the Marina Saturday to check in on Great Godsea. She's holding in there, although the power is out in the yard and thus my little circulating heater fan is not running in the cabin. batteries still holding a charge. But the marina is SOCKED IN. solid ice. and many of our docks are damaged. They are going to have a lot of work to do getting everything up and running again. attaching a few photos for effect.

Cruising / Solo Sailing the 323.

So, its my 3rd season sailing.
my third season with my new girlfriend.. "The Great Godsea".
Have taken her out many times sailing in NY Harbor, out into the lower bay, down to the highlands or out along the bight as far as fire island.
But sailing frequency is less than optimal.
So, i'm committing myself to get out and really work on sailing skills every week this summer.
To that end, i'm going out (in good weather) regardless of having add'l crew.

And so, Solo Sailing.
previous owner tells me he always sailed solo, using basically the Genoa only.
i'm trying to envision tacking and jibing while alone. the juggling of the lines while steering through the wind.
i dont have an autopilot that works currently... working on connecting the old one to the GPS....i'm told by the company that its possible. 

I seek Solo Sailing advice from you, my esteemed Pearson community members.

Mast and Spar Issues / mast boot doesnt do the job

I've just never been fully satisfied with the job our guy did at the end of 2013 season. i still see drops of water rolling down the mast in the cabin when its raining. I can't find the spot where the leak is getting through. Have resorted to stuffing plastic and cloth up from the cabin into the space to try and keep it dry. i fear that the water has gotten into the cabin ceiling around the mast. the teak that surrounds the hole is discolored and delaminated. very annoying. anyone have any suggestions? (other than the obvious... re wrap the mast).

although that may be the only solution. it seems like its just not done well and needs to be re-applied.

we were sailing in heavy wind and rain on saturday... all was going well, when we noticed that one of the 2 screws attaching the boom vang to the mast had ripped out. boom was about a foot higher than usual and we began to worry about too much strain on the traveler so we shut it all down.

so, the boom vang attaches to to a bracket, and the bracket has just 2 screws holding it to the mast. is that really the way it should be?
obviously it takes a LOT of strain.
seems like it needs a stronger foundational point than just 2 screws.

wondering if i should come up with a better way to attach it, now that its broken.

im told that i can sail to sandy hook NJ and either anchor or tie up somehow and spend the night camping on the beach, having campfire etc. anyone know how/where this is done? i'm looking for a 2 day trip from manhattan this weekend. thanks.

So, i need advice on getting out of Fire Island and the great south bay back to open water.
We are docked in Seaview marina and will be until Friday when the weather should be calm enough to sail out (very rough seas and winds on sunday night/monday and predicted for tues/wed/thurs).
We Sailed from Jersey City to Seaview marina on fire Island at 4am on Sunday, July 6.
A great trip the entire way until we got to Fire Island Inlet.
We navigated successfully through, under the Robert Moses bridge and into the bay, when it got VERY INTERESTING.
We used our gps and the through hull depth sounder to try and stay in the "channel" but found that the map depths were WAY off from the reality and even though we were between buoys we kept getting very shallow readings.  suffice it to say we struggled mightily for 2 hours trying to avoid sandbars and shoals.
Somehow, we got through and finally nosed in  at 1:30 in the afternoon.
We were told that we arrived at an historic low tide... our keel sticking in the mud as we finally tied into our slip.
(Two important pieces of info...
A. Fire island has NO fuel docks.. NONE. the only way to get fuel apparently is to cross the entire, shallows filled and poorly marked bay over to Bayview. greaaat.
B. Seaview marina has NO restrooms or showers. you have to walk to the beach or find a restaurant... all for only $165 a night weekdays... its significantly dearer on weekends.
most marinas on the island have similar limitations there so you need to have your self well provisioned. )
SO, if you have any advice about the updated ACTUAL channels or where i could access good current maps of them, i'd be most appreciative. i'm already reaching out to the fire island coast guard station.

some lessons learned through this experience.
-be sure to arrive (and leave) at high tide for extra wiggle room through these really randomly shallow areas.
-do not attempt this at night. you really need daylight to verify where you actually are.
-maybe try and follow the biggest deep keeled fishing boat or ferry boat if you get the chance.
-verify all the facilities at the marina you intend to visit to be sure you don't get surprised.
-be sure your fuel tank is topped off as much as possible and bring extra filled fuel containers with you.

Thanks in advance for any information the community can share. it was really dicey going in and i want to avoid trouble going home.
