Good day friends,
Where are my keel bolts? I read all sorts of cautions and preventive maintenance tips. Thoughts?

Thank you!

Engine and Drive Train / no water strainer?
« on: November 01, 2019, 04:57:02 PM »
My freshwater intake puts lake water directly into the tranny-then-engine with no water strainer, anywhere. Is that common? I found grit when draining out the water jackets.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Jim

Swam on the prop this weekend and removed about ten wraps of dock line. All is well now. Back to full operation. Thanks again for your stupid question.  My Doc neighbor scared me with his story of bending his shaft, hauling the boat, shipping it out for repairs, etc, etc, $5,000.

That's NOT a stupid question! It's precisely what a smart person would do! My boat repair guy asked the same thing. I'll be doing it tonight. Thanks for your input.

They say everyone has done it. I made it 35 years before I did it. propeller got wrapped, made some vibrating, killed the engine. It starts and runs now but won't stay in forward or reverse very well at all. Motor dies when operating from F or R into neutral.

Where do I start? I've done visual inspection of the tranny. It shifts as per normal.

thanks,

Engine and Drive Train / tighten packing gland?
« on: June 23, 2019, 10:51:10 AM »
Good morning,
If I wanted to tighten up my packing gland (It's dripping a bit too fast)...

1. Does the prop have to be locked up? Might I lock the shaft with a plumber's wrench from inside? Or swim on it and tie it?
2. Any specialized wrench to get to the gland nut? Plumber's wrench?

Thanks for sharing all your experience.

And, Yes, I know I should have done this while on the hard last winter!!! Sorry.

Jim

Sails and Canvas / asymetrical halyard
« on: March 05, 2019, 03:55:29 PM »
Hello folks,
I'd like to get an asym this spring.  I figure I hoist it (the "sock") with the jib halyard. But, what if I want to fly both the asym and a genoa at the same time?

Is there room up there for a second halyard?
BTW, I do not have roller furler.

Plus, your shopping recommendations? online.

Thank you,
Jim Selvy

Understood. Maybe. Please define sacrificial fairing?  It is pulling away. material appears to be about 1/4" thick. I'd like it pretty before bottom painting.
And what's your choice for filling cracks?

Thanks again, soooo much.

correction....the area starting to separate is on the skeg. Not rudder.

I'm trying to attach a photo but it's too large and I'm not savvy enough to change it....yet.

Hello again,
I'm sure appreciating your expertise on this site. Thanks again!

Very soon I'll be starting repair of minor hull cracks. What material shall I use to fill?

Then, one area of the rudder is starting to pull away. What matierial shall I fill this with? photo attached.

Happy New Year to you!!
