Why don't we set up a "Pearson 323 Owners Map"? using Google Maps?
Similar to this one used by MacGergor owners?
Macgregor Sailors Map (https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=112822176955601354147.00046219e7bbd0f07ef24&z=0)
It would go a long way in helping us form local/regional get together's.

Good idea

Thanks for the suggestion!
We also have an owners map for our U20 here: http://www.u20class.org/boat/U2OOwnersMap.html
Perhaps there is a way to populate or link the map from our owners directory home port field. I will look around a bit...
-
I also think its a good idea. Just have people getting 323's to the south of me and it would be nice to have that info. I don't think anyone would have a problem giving up numbers and locations.
-
I'm no computer expert, but i'm intrigued enough that i'm trying to figure out how to set up that shared map idea. maybe i can figure out how to do it... or maybe even improve on it. what would be an improvement?
-ability to sync the site to your onboard gps so people can follow along when one of us is on an adventure?
-have photos associated with boats (if user chooses)?
-other suggestions? is this too invasive?
-
Well, here is my attempt at setting up a similar link. i've named it "Pearson 323 Owners Map". i know, not very original but hey... i'm no perfectionist. anyone who opens the link below can edit it in any way they like.
https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zj7d0SU7eA2Y.kOytC5G6zX9s
feel free to edit and update and improve as you will. i hope this helps. Mark

Mark,
I tried to add my location, but apparently I had "View Only" access
@(^.^)@ Ed
-
sorry about that. ok. i believe ive fixed it, enabling all to edit as well as view

It worked for me! Cool feature
Thanks

-
Very nice...except that The Great Godsea seems to be in a parking lot :-)
-
Very nice feature. Any suggestions about what to do with boats that we see but are not on our registry? I saw hull 45 today in Morro Bay and know of a few others in my own marina.
-
we still need to
-figure out how to create a short name link, rather than using the whole url.
-make a link on the pearson site to the map.
also, i think there are ways to make the map more dynamic. such as...
-associating the position on the map with the boats gps?
-sharing favorite cruises, waypoints, ports/marinas/bars, warnings.
-weather info.
-links to other relevant items/places.
-other suggestions?
-
Still can't get access! All I get is shown below.
I also clicked the "Share" button in the upper right and sent in an access request, which you should be getting.
-
http://tinyurl.com/ is a company that makes URLs tiny.
I processed your link and got http://tinyurl.com/okmotxy
-
Thats Great! i followed your link/process and came up with a Pearson-centric version of shortened name:
http://tinyurl.com/Pearson-323-Owners
-
regarding the view only issue. somehow the permissioning got changed back to view from edit. i fixed it and saved it again so hopefully everyone should have editing access now.

It works now. :D

most excellent.

Nice to "sea" it was taken to heart!
Already working for me as I note Great Godsea is only some 55 or so Nautical Miles from me.
We like to hit the west end of Long Island Sound as much as the east end. Nothing beats cruising Manhattan.
Our favorite marina is the Worlds Fair Marina in Flushing Meadow. We go at least once a year and catch the Met's at CitiField.
Walk off the boat, cross the parking lot, enter the Ballpark and watch your team, head back and spend the night. Nothing beats it.
Friendliest Marina crew I ever met too.
We have friends down in Staten Island I plan to visit one day.
Also want to participate in the Around Long Island Regatta. Heck your close enough to the start off the Rockaway's you can beat us there!!
Anyway, this is a great start, let's get others to jump in!

hey those are some great ideas! i'm hoping (fingers crossed) to make my first overnight run this weekend down to sandy hook/highlands. weather looks promising and its not getting any warmer so... i'm going to strike while the iron is hot.
perhaps next summer, once i'm a little less wet behind the ears, we'll take a stab at getting through hells gate out into the sound and maybe over to fire island... or even out to Newport?
regards, Mark
-
Mark,
Congratulations! You just made post # 1000 to this forum!
-
hey awesome! maybe i'll get some positive Karma

Nice work on the map! I can add a nav link to the website but we may want to experiment/test the map features a bit more first. It looks like we have a good group of early adopters to test things out. For example we can define new "standard" data fields that we think would be useful and use the titles to provide guidelines on what information to enter. As an example I added a column for Yacht Club/Marina to see if people like it.
-
you can make the yacht club info a clickable link by just copying and pasting the url for your marina from the web into the data field on your boat on the owners map

I agree. I'm particularly concerned that there is wide-open write access. That's practically an open invitation to get hacked or defaced.
Is there any way to restrict access to just the google accounts (e-mail addresses) of registered forum members?
-
there is a way to limit it. i believe we can set permissioning to only allow a specified list of users (i believe by email address) to have edit rights. but i dont know the overall list of owners to include in the list. i figured we dont want to discourage any boat owners from joining in...i was figuring we can change from an open format to permissioned format whenever we think we've got a good enough sized population. at least that was my rationale for setting it up to be open to all. but i'm happy to have it set up however the members would like it. open to all editing at this point.

Mark,
Sounds great!
Anytime you head east through Long Island Sound by Port Jefferson/Mt Sinai Hrbor and need to rest, you're more than welcome to raft up to SEA HAVEN in Mt Sinai and share my mooring for the night. I over sized my mooring so it's more than adequate if you need it as a storm shelter.
I did Hell's gate in an under powered Bristol 29.9 back in '04. If a 8900 lb boat with a 15 pony diesel can do it, you can. It's not as bad an issue with our boat, just a matter of favorable timing! That's what Navigators do, select the best time for a favorable passage.
My original post at this site (under NAUTILUS) referenced my concerns about boat power as I was looking at the 323. My transit in the Bristol from Bay Shore to Mt Sinai via the East River wasn't bad with the exception of 1.5kt SOG at 3AM going under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge! Seemed to take hours fighting that tide. I was NEVER so bored in my life staring at that Toys-R-Us sign in Graves End for HOURS lol!!
Here is a GREAT site regarding the East River and Hells Gate The East River Passage (http://www.offshoreblue.com/cruising/east-river.php)
Print it out , put it in a binder using plastic sheet protectors and keep it at the Nav Station. Make sure you print out each individual current chart as well.
Also, if you haven't done so, join ACTIVE CAPTAIN (https://activecaptain.com/index.php) and look for me (Sea Haven).
I have a COMPLETE listing of waypoints and routes completely around Long Island (including the Great South Bay) to Block Island, Long Island sound incluing Connecticut, Thames and Mystic Rivers, NY Metro sector including Staten Island and as far north up the Hudson to Poughkeepsie. I can also send you GPX files of the lot for your NAV Software if it accepts that format.
Finally, I'm meeting the "other" Ed, "Dolce Vita", at the United States Sailboat Show (http://www.usboat.com/us-sailboat-show/home) Annapolis MA on Saturday October 12th. Take the day trip and come join us a we speak everything "323" and look for goodies to buy or dream about!
Regardless, I do hope we get to meet up and perhaps take both boats as far east as we can get...Block Island....Newport...New Bedford....Nantucket.

that all sounds great. very excited for next season!
-
any idea if theres a way to get the link to the owners map added to the home page to increase awareness? i tried webmaster but it doesn't really have a usable email address.
-
I added a link to the map on the boat registry page you can see here (http://www.pearson323.com/p323owners.html), and specified it as a prototype. In my opinion with an unsecured/open tool such as this on the internet it is only a matter of time before it is hacked into and vandalized, causing data integrity issues. I think that some type of authentication scheme should be developed before a lot of data is stored here. I would also like to see us avoid duplicating data that is stored in the registry, perhaps a scheme can be developed to keep them in sync. I think that the owners registry database fields could be imported into the map data fields -- with these we would only need to update information in one place... but more research is necessary.
My quote from a previous post:

Also each page on the site has a footer with a link "contact us" to email the webmaster. I changed it to "contact webmaster" for clarity, thanks for the feedback!

I attached four photos to my P323 Owners Map. Check them out. Rusty Pelican in MA
BTW:We need more owners to sign on. Owners on the map add some photos.
BobG
-
Bob, how did you attach the photos? i cant get them to paste in there.
-
Same problem here. I enter the url and save, but it doesn't take.
-
You first must post them to a website. In my case from an old blog. Just add the url in the owners map, by editing profile
-
That's exactly what I'm doing; entering the url of an already posted image:
http://www.chessie.com/boat/AftQuarterView.jpg
If I paste it in the edit box, and hit either Save or Add, the edit popup closes, and when I reopen it, the url I pasted is gone.
-
I just added the pic to your map profile. I think it works.
-
Nice boat BTW
-
Hey Excellent! finally got it working. copied the image URLs from Shutterfly. I love it when a plan comes together.
-
I've added my soon to be re-named 323!
-
i see one of our intrepid gang has been improving the owners map. NICE WORK! Thank you!
-
Brian, i cant find the link on the boat registry page you mention. seems like a great way to get more of the group to sign up to the map. maybe i'm just not looking in the right place for the link. thanks, Mark
-
Follow from the main menu navigation area and see the link near the middle of the boat registry page: Boat Registry > Pearson 323 Owners Map > Google maps. I no longer have permission to access the google map -- apparently some security has been implemented, which is good. How does one go about getting permission set up?
-
one interesting question/note for all of us. i guess that i used my gmail acct when i set up the site. now that its been made private, i'm getting a lot of requests for access to the site on my gmail. I dont recognize the email names so, i think i'm going to wait to add these requested emails until i get specific requests that identify who the request is from.
So, in answer to the previous post, i just checked the settings on the map and the map has been made private, only available to approved email addresses.
i can change it back to open to all, but i think there is some concern out there that letting the world have access to the map (and those who have located themselves on it) is not a healthy thing.
i can see the point there.
so, i'm pretty sure all i need to do is add your email address to the list and you'll have full access. just let me know what email address to use (please identify yourself beyond email address so i know who's who. .
Thanks, Mark

nospam.takwita_ ihatespam@gmail.com is me, the owner of Rusty Pelican.
Robert Glennon
let me in plz.
BTW it's not a good idea to post complete email address on this site, please take that post down
-
thx Rob. previous msg edited. and i'll add you folks to the permissioned users.
-
I added the link P323 Owners Map (https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zj7d0SU7eA2Y.kOytC5G6zX9s) to the website navigation bar (left column) known as "Pearson Links" on each of the main pages.

It occurred to me that many P323 owners may not be aware that we have an owners registry of Pearson 323 hulls that is sorted by state on this website in a PDF file (currently 258 boats). You can easily locate boats/owners in your area if you live in US or Canada by looking at your state/province and nearby states.

I imagine the registry is out of date on several vessels. It has my vessel listed to the guy who was the owner, two owners ago.

Thank you Mark
Added Searenity to the map.

The boat/owner information is only as accurate as what is provided to the webmaster by P323 owners -- in other words owners need to send an email when boats are bought, sold, moved, etc. I will plan to update the website to clarify this process.
Regarding the owners map enhancement:
I found that I was able to import all of the boats from the registry (with a utility) into a Google map and placeholders are created for the home port cities provided in the registry. These are not the exact location on the water but the markers are placed in the correct city. It is cool having 250+ boats in the map but it requires a premium version of Google maps that cost $5 per month. This version also provides the ability to imbed the map in the P323 website but it must be made public to do so.
-
I am a little unclear on who you would send this info to? It is also complicated as my boat is registered to me in Georgia, but Georgia does not title boats of any size. I found that odd myself, but your registration is completed with proof of ownership.
Not sure if I will keep the boat Coast Guard documented, not sure what benefits there are to that.
-

We are a little off the topic but send it to webmaster@pearson323.com

I documented my boat with the Coast Guard because I did not want the state registration numbers on the hull and I also planned to move it about on the east coast. But it is still in NC and now they have changed the rules and want me to register it with the state. To do that I would have to give up my CG registration. A bit of a dilemma.
-
Thank you. I have thought about updating the Coast Guard registration. Georgia requires the state sticker on the boat but no numbers on the hull if CGR. I am waiting to see how the proposal to make the CG Registration a yearly fee based on length of vessel rather than the current one time fee when updating the registration goes through.
-
I am doing some long overdue updates to the website which will include better links/instructions for the map and registry. Afterwards I plan on sending a mass mailing to owners to solicit updates for forum, registry, and map.
Mark G.: In hoping that we get an increase in map users I would recommend putting a map "backup" process in place just in case.
