Steering System, Hull Structure / Re: Packing for rudder stuffing box
« on: April 17, 2017, 10:21:54 PM »
The packing on my rudder stuffing box was the same as the prop shaft. They do leak if not maintained. On mine it was just a very small trickle of water running down under the engine.

The site is pretty quiet theses days. Hang in there, it picks up later in the season. Only the lucky ones that live in warmer climates are using their boats this time of year. Mine is still under tarps with snow on it!

Interior Structures / Re: Table Post
« on: September 11, 2014, 09:50:58 PM »
I'm the third owner. No sign of the post ever being there. The overhead light looks like a factory install. The post can be removed and the table top used to make out the double berth. The bottom mounting pedestal looks like the same one used on the posts for the other 323's but it's mounted closer to the settee, more centered one that space.

My boat (298) was built without the post. The table is mounted on a pedestal and there is a central dome light mounted where the top of the post would be.

Engine and Drive Train / Re: Hour Meter Wiring

Thanks for the reply. I should have stated that I do have the Volvo diesel. There is a low oil pressure alarm wired to the oil pressure switch but i'm not sure if I can hook into that. I didn't know about the coil problem with leaving the key on with A4s. Do you think that applies to the diesel engine as well?

Engine and Drive Train / Hour Meter Wiring
« on: August 21, 2014, 08:59:54 AM »
Is there a way to wire the hour meter so that it only runs when the engine is actually running? My meter starts counting as soon as I turn on the ignition. I often leave the key on so I can start the engine without having to go below and turn the key on.

Engine and Drive Train / Re: Propeller free wheeling...or not?

Sea Haven, does locking the transmission in forward stop the shaft from turning? I tried setting my shift lever to both forward and reverse while sailing and the engine off and the shaft never stopped turning. If the shaft is turning does that mean the transmission is turning? I'm still not sure where to have it set when sailing.  :-\

I got a Pearson builders plate in Bronze from Bristol Bronze in Rhode Island. They do great work!

What a great story! I wonder how much work they had to put into the boat to get it ready to cross the Pacific!

Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Running halyards aft
« on: March 14, 2014, 10:06:02 PM »
I'm thinking about installing a UK Lazy Cradle (lazy jack system) and running at least the main halyard aft. Does anybody have any experience with the Lazy Cradle and thoughts on how best to position the hardware, like the blocks and winch for the main halyard, to make it all work? As always, pictures are worth a thousand words!  :)

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Re: Cabin Fans
« on: February 19, 2014, 09:34:34 PM »
I was thinking about mounting them on the wood panel along the side of the V berth as near to the bow end as possible. Do you think I need to run a separate circuit up there or can I splice into the cabin lights wires?

Any one have suggestions on installing fans in the V berth and saloon? I'm thinking about using Hella Turbo fans. Looking for any help on wiring and placement. If you have photos of your installation, all the better!

Sails and Canvas / Re: Winter cover for Pearson 323
« on: November 10, 2013, 10:00:16 PM »
I made a "custom" cover using Kover Klamps. It took a good day to get the frame done and another to get the tarps secured.
The clamps allow you clamp standard 3/4" conduit together in almost any configuration. When fully assembled it makes a very strong frame.

Hi Ron! I looked at Barefoot but opted to buy another 323. Barefoot does have a great interior.  Are you going to keep her at Barkers Island? I'm at Port Superior near Bayfield, WI.
