Title: Forstay attachment point
Post by: jmcmonagle on July 04, 2018, 10:06:28 AM
This  fall removed the mast ant when I put it back up attached to the normal forward most chain plate position.
Problem was the furler did not exit in the correct position.
Checked an old photo and saw it on the second from most aft hole.
Put it back where is was.
The attached photo pretty well tells the story.
Notice that the furler "turnbuckle" is screwed most of the way in and there is an extra toggle..

Want to change the furling line to port as it's in the way when anchoring.
Thinking of moving forstay to the forward position when I make the change.
I can't think of any reason to have it as it is.
Can anyone think of a reason to leave it?

If  I move forstay as is to the forward position it will move the top of the mast back a little.
Any recommendations on mast rake?

Thanks for any input.

John

I don't see why you couldn't move it forward. Especially since you probably have the length needed by extending the mini-turnbuckle at the base (or replacing with new turnbuckle for more room). Most boats I've seen with a furler have it positioned as far forward as possible, which can allow for a smaller jib to be attached with a snap shackle or similar in the aft hole and still run up the track of the furler.

Mine is attached to the forewardmost position, as you can (sorta) see in this photo.

Thanks to both of you for the feedback..
I moved it yesterday.
Kept the extra  toggle in and at least for now was unable to loosen the lock nut on the furlers turnbuckle.
Added to mast rake a bit but think it's OK.
Also moved the furling line from starboard to port to make anchoring saner.
Will attack the lock nut aging with better tools and add a little penetrating oil.
