Shaffer Mainsheet FAILURE
« on: June 20, 2014, 01:16:34 PM »
SHAME on SHAFFER for using such a small cross section on such an important component!

The funny thing is we were sailing our brains out offshore the day before and it held up.

The next day motoring across a glasslike inlet I heard a "think" and the boom swung over the gunnel!

Alma,

Have the exact same one. I take it it's original equipment?
I see the Garhuaer Main Sheet system in my future this upcoming off season.

I repaired it with two of those chain links that have the threaded sleeve allowing the link to open. I keep inspecting them and they are OK so far. I don't crank down on the mainsheet for sail trim so much now that I have a solid vang. I know I'd like a more sophisticated traveler but at the same time I would not like a lot more hardware to trip over going over the bridge deck...

As long as this jury rigged Shaffer holds up I'm happy. I think I eliminated the weakest parts.
