Greetings 10M owners. Any words of wisdom on repairing the brake on the wheel column? Mine was jammed tight when I bought her and am reluctant to use a pair of vise grips or channel locks to loosen.
Appreciate any comments/suggestions, Ken

I would start with a penetrant such as Kroil, PBBlaster, or a 50/50 mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid. (Not WD40)
Mild heat and tapping on the shaft will also help. Work the shaft back and forth. Don't try to free it in one go. And have lots of patience. This will take some time and repeated applications.

Thank you for the tips. I was wondering if I should pull the compass to see what the hang up is.

Yes remove the compass .Two small 6/32 bolts and power splice to light in the compass. You now have access to the brake and steering chain sprocket. We have done this on Chance 323 Pearson  hull !0 for 40 years. Now you  can solve your brake problem and lube the chain and brake. Bob K

+1 on removing compass. The compass should be stored indoors over cold winter to prevent a bubble forming in the damping fluid.


Once the compass is off you can see if the brake mechanism is actually turned all the way past loose causing a jam.

Once you see the brake mechanism it is straight forward.

I haven't used mine in an age- I use the autopilot on standby as a brake.
