Windlass
(1/1)
jmcmonagle:
I'm contemplating a windlass.
I can git it up but usually rather sore for about a day thereafter :-(
Looks like an expensive and rather complicated project.
Normally I would only consider a manual windlass but there is not that much available anymore.
Anyone know anything about the new Lewmar vx1?

Do you think the 500 watt version for 5/16 chain is good enough?
Any suggestions?

Captain Bri:
The specs look good for boats up to 40' for the Lewmar. I was discussing a windlass install recently with one of my sailing mentors at the boatyard and he recommended installing a dedicated battery for the windlass up front. That way you only have to run charging cables to the foredeck instead of heavy copper. An install I saw on a P323 for sale had moved all the batteries into the salon just to shorten the distance to the windlass.
Rusty Pelican:
I had the same thoughts about a windless.
Decided it was not worth the time or money.
My solution:
Pick the right anchor for the job
Don't anchor deep, and if I need more mojo, I run the rode up to the 2 speed winch on the mast.
