No name winches?
« on: May 12, 2017, 08:33:26 AM »
Hey guys,

I want to sevice my winches and there are no markings on it denoting a brand name anywhere. Is there anyone who would know what brand the primaries were on a 1978 323. I went as far as removing the drums but there was nothing inside either.

My understanding is that Lewmar 40s were original equipment for primary winches.

I (hull 212, 1980) have 2xLewmar 42 as primaries; 2xLewmar 16 at the mast, and one Lewmar 6 on the boom.

Yours must be different - Lewmar's are clearly marked.  Perhaps post a photo?

I own Hull 10 Pearson 323 1977 Chance

Our secondary winches now were our original primaries on the boat.  Back in 1977 they were 2 speed Lewmar 40 winches made in England.  1 Lewmar 8 for the Main, mounted on the mast, and 1 Lewmar 16 for Jib/Genoa, also mounted on the mast.  Both were single speed.  On top of the winches is a round plate that states the size and maker of the winch.  I had covers on my winches for years so I could still read the size and maker information on the round plate.

Mine are Lewmar 40 (2 speed, not self-tailing).  They are plainly marked.  Hull #344 (1982 model).

Thanks to all of you that took the time to reply. I appreciate all of the info. I'm still stuck on this one and at this point if I need to go through the trouble of removing the winch just to see the brand and service them I am probably going the route of making it an upgrade for next spring. I have been sailing single handed so far and self tailing winches seem to be the logical and safer way to go for me and my situation. The price tag is not something I'm looking forward to but if it adds to the enjoyment and improves my confidence then it's a worth while investment as far as I'm concerned.  Thanks again for your assistance.
