prop shaft removal
« on: April 20, 2015, 01:19:44 PM »
Do i just loosen the pinch bolt and lock bolts to loosen shaft at transmission? Or do i need to jack that collar off with the longer bolts.

The shaft coupler at the transmission usually has to be pressed off of the shaft.  Often, there is a keyway as well.

One technique that some have used with success is to unbolt the shaft coupler from the transmission coupler, place a socket wrench that is slightly smaller than the shaft in between them, and tighten the two coupler faces back together with longer bolts.  With luck, this will press the shaft out, but don't go crazy on it it it doesn't budge.  I know at least one person who destroyed his coupler by tightening too hard when it didn't budge.  Heat, Kroil, gentle tapping, anf patience are your friends here.
