Fastest way to give old paint a new shine?
« on: April 10, 2011, 04:56:22 PM »
Hi swabs  ;D

I'm looking for advice on how to restore the finish on previous painted topsides. I have a heavy oxidized dark blue hull that I hope to bring back to a respectable gloss. So far, I plan on trying some finesse it compound and some kind of electric buffer. The other thought was to wet sand. Anyone have experience with either of these methods? This is. Previously painted, gelcoat

Thanks in advance for any advice

Chet

Do not be tempted to use Poli Glo, it does look great but after five years on its is HELL to get off.

I have a good old boat like your and use a buffer a medium speed, clean the whole sheer and then go back with a coat of wax. I use Magyars, they have a kit of cleaner, buffer and wax for sale a your local chandler's I am sure.  Make sure you use carnauba wax NOT silicone based.

Good luck, and esy on those elbows....

Hi Chet,

See the Practical Sailor Blog posting "A Practical Look at Waxing and Polishing Your Boat" dated April 19, 2011.

I followed the instructions given at http://www.sailnet.com/forums/gear-maintenance/52772-tips-compound-polish-wax.html

The poster, Maine Sail, seems to give solid advice, and I have previously mentioned his project page (http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/boat_projects) which is totally awesome.

Anyway, it took a lot of time and effort, but I did get my hull shiny - but admittedly it was gelcoat.

Glance back through your Don Casey material.  He has some thoughts on this.
