Spreaders
Dulcinea:
Does anyone have a measurement for spreaders? I'm interested in knowing the length of the spreader from the mast end to the point where the cap shroud contacts the spreader. RigRite has the spreader but mine seems to be a different measurement from what they have as a standard for the 323. My boat is a 1978.
Dolce_Vita:
Funny you should ask. I just measured mine a few weeks ago as part of my winter 2012/13 mast rebuild project.
I too couldn't find an exact match at RigRite, although the Spartan SP-512 seemed the closest. They do call it out as being used on the P-323, and they have a spreader base for the SP-512 that is matched to a Sound Spars 7747 mast, which is what I'm pretty sure I have too. That base looks just like the ones I have, and is also called out as having been used on some P-323s,
My spreaders have a straight section towards the base, followed by a tapered section towards the tip, and have the "twist-lock" tips for capturing the rigging.
Anyway, here's the (rough) spreader measurements from my 1977 P-323:
Width at base: 4"
Thickness at base: 1 3/8"
Untapered Length: 21 1/2 "
Full Length (excluding tip fitting): 45"
Full Length to inside of bearing surface inside tip: 45 3/4"
Width at tip: 1 3/4"
Thickness at tip: 5/8"
These were taken with a tape measure, so the thicknesses and widths were eyballed and could be a bit off.
But the critical dimension, (base to bearing surface), should be good.
Dulcinea:
Thanks Ed. One more question: Does your spreader have a hole in it that corresponds to a hole for a clevis pin in the spreader base? I've been looking at the SP 512, but the SP 165 is the only one that also indicartes it is for Pearsons and shows the spreader base with the clevis pin hole. (and boy is RigRite proud of these spreaders......about $500/ea! yikes

Dulcinea:
...and even more confusing is that the SP 165 is almost exactly your length: 3'9 1/4", or 45 1/4" whereas the max "standard" length for the SP 512 is almost 48".
Dolce_Vita:
Yeah, it is confusing. My spreaders and bases have a hole for the single clevis pin that holds the spreaders on. This lets them move around a little fore and aft when the rigging is loose.
Note the crack at the base from too much movement. I'm having this welded rather than buying replacements!
