Pearson 323 Rig Tension using a Loos Gauge
(1/1)
Stuart Farrell:
I am in the process of re-tuning my Pearson 323 (1978 Boat #150) and I'll be using a Loos Gauge to check the rig tension. . I was wondering if anyone had some Loos Gauge numbers that I can use for a reference?
I know from reading some previous posts that the suggested starting point would be about 10% of the breaking strength of the wire.........so I figured about 960lbs for the backstay/forestay and uppers. And, about 750lbs for the lowers?
Any input would really be appreciated! Thanks!

Those numbers are similar to what I’ve been using. The original settings when I bought the boat were so low that the downwind shrouds would flop around loosely!
However, when tuned up properly, I started experiencing mast “pumping†in a fore-aft direction whenever there was significant wind abeam of the boat. This usually only happens when tied up in a slip, although I have experienced it when motoring in a crosswind.
I’d be interested in hearing if you have anything similar happen.
