[Frayed Knot]

Looking for a 3 blade prop for my Pearson 323.  It has an 1 1/8" shaft and Volvo MD11 diesel I am not sure of the size or pitch it should be.  I believe it should be left hand.  Used good shape or new.

who told you a 3 blade would be better to back up? it's actually WORSE!!!!!  The only thing the 3 blade did for me was reduce rudder turbulence.  I couldn't back up worth a shit with my 3 blade, so went back to a 2 blade.   So if that's the only reason you want a 3 blade, you may want to do more research on the brand and type you're looking to buy. We have a 15x9 three blade on ours. I don’t think there’s room for anything bigger than 15, and I find that the 9 pitch is a little under-proped for our Atomic4.

And we can’t back up well either. Has a horrendous prop walk in reverse.

Selene's original propeller was 3 bladed, marked 13 x 9 1/2. 1.25" on 1.125" shaft.

We replaced it with a 15x9 maxprop. Working well so far (and we are faster under sail - difficult to measure precisely, but I would put it between a 0.2 and 0.4kn advantage. And a feathering prop is cool :-)

Backing into a slip is a challenge for us too. The maxprop makes it somewhat easier (as the blades reverse orientation, so it works as well in reverse as forwards), but I think the main issues we all tend to have are due to the keel length, and especially the skeg, which disrupts the water flow over the rudder.

I have the original 3 blade and always back into my slip. Prop walk helps me do that.

Yeah, from my experience, a 3 blade prop is great for doing standing turns!
