1978 Pearson 323 Gel Coat color
« on: May 18, 2021, 11:23:18 PM »
Hello all,

I need to make a few gel coat repairs to some scrapes and dings on the hull. Does anyone know what color the hull is and who may sell the closest matching paint. I understand that the color is photo reactive and UV changes the color, however, starting with the right base and tinting up with white can help achieve a better match.

Best regards to all.

I am not sure, but I think Pearson may have offered a range of colors...Selene's hull is "ivory", i.e. off-white with a slight brown hue. I would love to hear from others as to the color of their hulls.

As far as I know, you have three options:

1) Buy a gelcoat matching kit, and try and match it yourself (tricky, or rather, personally I don't have the color sense)
2) Go to a good yard with prerequisite experience
3) Locate a decent sized gelcoat chip, and send it to a gelcoat matching service. There are quite a few which advertise online.

If anybody has done (3), and has an Ivory colored hull, please do share!

I have a few spots I'm going to tackle.

My background is in color correcting photography and I tried a little experiment to see If I could find a way to get close before I start.

Here is a photo of white Marine Tex against ALMA's cream colored gelcoat. It shows some yellow, brown and black are going to be necessary.

The best Vid I've seen is this one- https://youtu.be/MxzCZ-5lMxY
