On CHANCE 1977 323 we start by putting  the mast in  the center of boat in mast collar  After that we start by running the main halyard with a 50 foot steel tape attach.  Then hoist to the top of mast and cleated.  Now take tape and measure  to the shroud pins attach to the turnbuckles.  This will center the mast then tighten to about 43 on a loos gauge 750 lb. keep checking with the tape to center the spar we end up at about 46 or 1100 lb . Tighten the lower front shrouds  first so the spar is straight ,going back and forth side to side keep it straight port to starboard set at 500lb. Next your aft shroud same as front shrouds at 500lb. Sheet your main boom in tight center on traveler . Now get off the boat and sight the mast  from the side 100 feet away, for forward and aft rake . Try to get the mast straight up and down by tightening the fore stay and back stay check pressure on your sheet does not affect the back stay easy out main sheet.tighten the back stay to about 43 or 750lb.  Now take a look at the mast check fore and aft try to get  straight as possible.  If you have roller furling or a foil the fore stay well only have to be set once not every year.  Now sail the boat ,take look up the spar that is straight no fall off the top mast and straight in mid section to top. my lowers are at about 1100 lb and upper also 1100lb.  I have and adjustable hydraulic back stay which is usually at 1000 lb  more if its above 20 mph .you will bend the boat so aft bins well not open if not careful .The sails cut for most boats other then high tech well have about 6" of fall off on the fore stay keeps the boat power up even J boats 3"or 4"  Pearson 323 is not a great pointing boat but reaches and down wind we do well  As i always say every boat has it day to win races!  Another thing I did was where the spreader is pin ,add  another 1/4" bolt to keep the spreaders from swing it works great the bolt is about  1 1/2 " from pin aft.   Bob K CHANCE OWNER 42 years!

Mast and Spar Issues / Re: Mast winches

On CHANCE hull 10 ,I have also heated the bolts with a small torch.  What your doing is expanding the bolts then cooling to break it free. I have done this on the emergency tiller port to break it free after a number years not being open. Also use penetrating oil big screw driver and tap it with hammer as you turn.  Sometimes I have try tightening the bolt then back it off .  Good Luck Bob K

Exterior Finish and Fiberglass / Re: General Painting thread (P26)
« on: November 28, 2018, 01:04:24 PM »
When you do any painting, Prep is is the most important work to be done. After washing done the area . The top sides and all areas that were  wax.   Should be clean with a wax remover, otherwise you will  sand that wax into the gel and paint might fail.    I have for years wash my painted top sides, cabin sides and wax them by hand to protect them.  No power buffers ,there hard on the paint and the gel. Especially when the gel is 30 or 40 years old getting thin.     Bob K Chance hull 10 owner 41 years

Jeff back in the  early 70s  I had a 1967 pearson vanguard  that had a cable  in furler and line splice .  I believe it was a schaffer marine product.   Have not seen one in years.                                                                                                        Bob K Chance 323 Hull 10

Engine and Drive Train / Re: Removing Atomic 4
« on: November 12, 2018, 07:56:19 PM »
Scott I have an atomic 4 in Chance Pearson 323 hull 10.  The water pump does not need to be primed.  I would take the cover off the pump and see if the impeller is in good shape. Look to see if all the blades are on it.  Make sure a blade is not torn off the impeller an blocking the intake or engine side of the pump.   If they are ok, I would try turning the impeller and see how easily it turns if it is on the shaft properly.  If that is ok, I would spray the impeller with WD40 so the rubber impeller will be lubed and then touch the starter button and see if the propeller turns properly.  Good luck BoB K CHANCE

Boat Handling / Loose foot main
« on: August 04, 2018, 10:03:12 PM »
My last three mains on Chance have been loose footed .  I also put on a small ball bearing track  8 " on the boom for the clew.  Which is adjusted by and old harken magic box with ease.  Makes a huge difference  in sail shape and draft position. Usually sail with about 4 to 5"  draft when going to weather in light air up to 12 knots  less as wind picks up depending  on sea state.   Down wind easy off the halyard tension and the foot a little. Vang trim to get your ribbons coming off your battens to flow out.  When going on beat or close haul make sure you trim to get the ribbons to flow.  Set the traveler so the boom is no higher then center line.  If its blowing hard ease the traveler down to reduce helm.  To depower twist off the main by easing the main sheet and pulling your traveler to windward . When sailing up wind  set your jib cars so all three set of tell tails break  at the same time .  Move your cars  forward or aft to get this action, also if over powered move the card back to twist  off the genoa or jib to depower as needed . Your fall off on fore stay should be about 6 inches in the center .  This is the way most sails are cut , helps control the draft keeps from pulling the halyard to tight.  Down wind ease off the halyard a little and back stay if it easily adjustable.     If you can"t point sail fast and don't pinch , make it up in boat speed next best thing.  Every boat in phrf has its days .  Ours is on a beam reach and going downwind with  4'4" draft.  I have been sailing and racing  Chance for the past 41 years.

Spinnaker pole or whisker pole if racing can not be any longer than 100% of  the J. Pearson 323 J is 13.83 feet, which is about 13 feet 9 inches .  I carry a  4" diameter pole at  13 feet  6" for both wing and wing , and spinnaker runs.  I also        carry a forespar adjustable pole 2" in diameter,  7 feet and extend to  no more than 13 feet 9 inches per phrf rules.  I will use it in light winds no more than 8 mph winds , according to Bill M  from forespar with that small diameter. Any thing heavier chance of bending it.  Great price at $200 dollars.                                                                                                                    Bob K CHANCE hull 10  1977 owner 41 years

The  mast of Chance  pearson 323 1977  which is laying on saw horse for the winter.  I measure today is 46 feet 6 and 1/2 inches, that measurement was from the bottom of the al tube to the top of al tube.  This does not include the top mast head , which goes on top of the tube  has all blocks in it for the jib , main and spin hoist .                                                  Bob Kraus CHANCE  Hull 10  41 years

Steering System, Hull Structure / Re: Rudder removal
« on: December 18, 2017, 10:31:13 PM »
I took the rudder out of Chance pearson 323 1977 ,22 years ago. After she was hit by a lightning strike in 1995. There was excessive play in the rudder skeg shoe.  I want to epoxy the entire bottom of the boat plus rudder. I believe there is a bronze shoe fitting that the stainless rudder shaft or post fits in , needed some repairs.  Make sure you have enough room to drop the rudder and the length of the shaft, which goes just below the emergency tiller plate. I have seen people dig holes to get rudders out!  If you look at the rudder post you will see the shoe supporting it.  That is the of bottom of the shoe which is then fasten to skeg ,  I believe on the sides.   Again its been 22 years ago! Rudder is not light , you might have to lower it with a jack. Good luck Bob K

Ports & Hatches / Re: What Are the port sizes
« on: November 10, 2017, 10:15:46 AM »
On Chance Hull 10 replace all four in 2015 .  Bought  414 in size ,all opening are now  install with screens great cross ventilation. I purchase them from Fisheries Supply .  I also used the one with the closing knobs for a better seal .  They  were Beckson  P.O. BS-2-1 with the knobs .  The Cams were 414-BS-10 . Used pearson site for information on install very help full.  On voids between the  inside liner and outside truck cabin, put rod foam to keep  West  epoxy  from running out . You must thicken the epoxy also  to do sides and top, use spacer and clamps as pearson  site shows.
