Deck Mounted Hardware / Running lines aft on 323
« on: February 26, 2021, 09:51:53 AM »
Thinking  of running some lines aft on 323.

Think I have most of it figured out but am stumped on how to mount winch and clutches on the aft part of the cabin top.
The inner liner does not appear to be removable.
How have others mounted hardware in that area?

This  fall removed the mast ant when I put it back up attached to the normal forward most chain plate position.
Problem was the furler did not exit in the correct position.
Checked an old photo and saw it on the second from most aft hole.
Put it back where is was.
The attached photo pretty well tells the story.
Notice that the furler "turnbuckle" is screwed most of the way in and there is an extra toggle..

Want to change the furling line to port as it's in the way when anchoring.
Thinking of moving forstay to the forward position when I make the change.
I can't think of any reason to have it as it is.
Can anyone think of a reason to leave it?

If  I move forstay as is to the forward position it will move the top of the mast back a little.
Any recommendations on mast rake?

Thanks for any input.

Deck Mounted Hardware / Windlass
« on: September 12, 2017, 04:16:15 PM »
I'm contemplating a windlass.
I can git it up but usually rather sore for about a day thereafter :-(
Looks like an expensive and rather complicated project.
Normally I would only consider a manual windlass but there is not that much available anymore.
Anyone know anything about the new Lewmar vx1?

Do you think the 500 watt version for 5/16 chain is good enough?
Any suggestions?

Engine and Drive Train / MD11C fuel filter
« on: May 20, 2017, 08:46:39 AM »
I'm replacing the inert  of the canister fuel filter mounted on the engine.
I can't seem to be able get the gasket to stay in place as I put it in place.
I can barely get it to stay in place in the grove in the top housing  with a few fingers and as soon as I pull my fingers out it falls out of place.
Made 5 failed attempts so far.
Any tips?

Deck Mounted Hardware / Working jib sheeting angle
« on: May 02, 2017, 09:49:30 PM »
Have a working jib that I want to use during the windier times of year.
With the track on the rail the sheeting angle will not allow sailing close to the wind.
Have the same issue when deeply reefing the 150% jib.
I'm thinking of putting a short track on the cabin top.
Peeking under the headliner looks like I can get a track about 28" from centerline.
Should give about an 8 degree sheeting angle.
Anyone try this?
Any thoughts?

Plumbing and Galley Systems / Shower sump pump
« on: December 08, 2016, 04:54:16 PM »
Want to service the shower sump pump.
It works but makes lots of noise.
I'm not sure what make or model it is?
The only readable label on it is 16148-0000.
Looks a lot like this:

Photo is attached.
Anyone know what it is and/or what service kit to to purchase?

Deck Mounted Hardware / Anchor rode stowage.
« on: November 21, 2016, 10:06:16 PM »
My 323 has the optional anchor platform and roller.

In all previous boats I've owned  had a deck pipe and the rode went down it.
Never had any issues with that system.

Currently have extra anchor and line in the anchor locker.
Have the primary rode going down the bow vent.
Sort of works but the thimble and shackle sometime jams coming out.
I could do a chain to rope splice??
Have 20' 5/16 chain and 250' of 5/8 line.

Temped to put a deck pipe either in the anchor locker or near or in place of the vent.
Hesitant to make a big hole as I'm uncertain what the best solution is.

Windless has some appeal but overwhelmed with other projects.

Any recommendations?

Electrical Systems & Electronics / Shorepower inlet.
« on: November 21, 2016, 09:09:10 PM »
The surveyor determined the the fuse or breaker must be withing 3 feet of the inlet.
So the insurance company wants it changed :-(
At some point will want  new ac panel after I get done the other survey issues and things that really bother me.

I see two possible solutions.

1. Put breaker in the aft portion of the starboard lazarette.
Exactly where I'm not sure.
Needs to be accessible but not too easy to accidentally switch.

2. Move inlet  to below and right of the manual bilge pump.

Any thoughts on this?
I lean towards 2. When done all the ac stuff will be in one spot.
Biggest con is  cosmeticly  filling the old hole.

Deck Mounted Hardware / primary winch lead and other issues.
« on: November 21, 2016, 08:37:21 PM »
My only cockpit winches are in the usual primary position in the front of the cockpit.
Have a few issues:
With the 150% jenny the lead is near the aft stanchion.
The lead is too low.
Much of the time when I move the car need to re-route the sheet.
The sheet goes through part of the dodger so I need to leave it partially unsnapped when sailing.
The winch handle also hits the dodger strap and the dodger if it was not unsnapped.

See 2 solutions:
1. Move winches back to about where a secondary winch would be.
From there could trim while at helm.
Lead wouldn't be perfect but much better.
Would have to fix holes or possibly put in a secondary winches in that spot.

2. Put in turning blocks,
Redo dodger to get rid of strap.
Trim dodger a little to clear handle. Will not take much.

Any thought thoughts on this?
Any other way to fix it?

Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Halyard restrainer?
« on: September 02, 2016, 09:53:45 PM »
Have new to me 78 pearson323.
Have Harken mark1 furler.
On first attempt the 150% wrapped at the top.
If I added about 6" to foot pushing it all the way to top it works OK.
Noticed there was an unused tang near the top.
Kludged a halyard restrainer with a twist shackle in that tang.
It works but it's crude.

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking of removing the tang and putting in a harken halyard restrainer.
If I go that route will have to remove tang.
It appears the tang is attached via 2 bolts in the top front of the mast.
Are the 2 bolts part of what holds the cap into the top of the mast?
Want to save trips up the mast :-)

Engine and Drive Train / md11c transmission leak
« on: August 31, 2016, 07:17:14 PM »
My md11c transmission is leaking.
I'm guessing it's a seal where it connects to Walter v drive.
I'm not having much luck finding any information for this transmission.
I'll appreciate any information.

Engine and Drive Train / Diesel fill problem.
« on: August 31, 2016, 07:04:50 PM »
Purchased a 78 Pearson 323 with Volvo md11c about a month ago.
At most marinas can not get diesel pump filler into the fuel fill.
End up filling with funnel.
I suspect it's original fuel fill with 1.5" hose.
Will putting in a new fuel fill help or is it hopeless with a 1.5" hose?
Any suggestions?

Thanks

John
