Deck Mounted Hardware / 323 rear pulpit
« on: June 01, 2022, 11:17:55 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to rebed the pulpits on the boat and I noticed there appears to be some sort of a gasket between the pulpit and the boat on all of the rear pulpit mounts.? It's probably about an 1/8th thick or so. I didn't want to remove it yet until I knew what it was and if i can still get some. Maybe a hard rubber spacer? Any idea's?? Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Just returned from a sail to Block Island. Great sail. I only had 1 casualty,  the mast bail for the boom vang was forcefully removed from the mast without prejudice by the 30 knot gust that smashed us. It literally ripped right off the boat.

Figured now would be the time for a rigid vang. I see many of you have installed them. My question is which model Garhauer vang did you guys get? Some of you have mentioned making the spring stronger? Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

Ports & Hatches / Companionway Lock
« on: May 01, 2021, 10:04:32 AM »
So i made a new companionway drop board and I want to get the stainless plates that mount on the board opening that the sliding hasp goes through to lock it.

I cant find them because I don't know what they are called. I have googled everything I can think of and nothing.

So what the heck are these plates called??? If you have a source, please list it. If you have a pair you want to sell that works too. Thanks in advance.

I'll start this off by saying this topic might go sideways at some point because there is a lot in it but let's give it a shot. I'm sure there are older posts about this if a search is made but I am trying to make this a current post discussing modern/current 12v tech.

The more stuff we add to the boat, the more of a demand we place on our 12v systems. Looking to modernize some aspects of it and to create a more efficient charging/12v system. Listed below are just a few of the options I have been researching and I was curious if anyone has any current experience with this topic so far. All of this leads into solar panels and some other stuff I would like to add next season. I am doing all of the leg work now to have the plan in place. If anyone has a component to add they had good luck with please add it to this list and we can start a discussion on it. Please try to keep the tech discussed current.

Has anyone replaced the existing circuit panel with a newer one? Did you go bigger? Custom? Etc?
Has anyone added an additional panel to the existing board? If so where did you put it and what is it for?
Does anyone use a DC-DC charger to charge multiple banks?
Does anyone use a Agro FET battery isolator?
What MPPT charge controllers is everyone using?
Battery monitor? Which one's are you currently using and do you like it? Accuracy?
Batteries- How many and where did you tuck them away?
Anyone using 6-Volt in series house banks?
Alternators? Stock or larger Balmar etc?
ACR's?

Let start here and see where this takes us. The goal here is for everyone to benefit from the information gained. Thanks in advance and Happy Easter/Passover and whatever else.

Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Outhaul track size
« on: March 03, 2021, 01:36:17 PM »
Not sure of everyone else's setup. My outhaul consists of a metal car that rides in the boom track and is controlled by a cable which terminates to a car on a track on the side of the boom. A line is connected to the car and you can apply or remove tension from the clew in this manner. Does anyone know the width of the track on the side of the boom the adjustment car runs on? Thanks.

Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Main Sheet Length
« on: March 03, 2021, 01:16:30 PM »
I need to replace my main sheet. The boat is a Pearson 323 with a bone stock traveler/sheet system. How many feet of 1/2 inch is needed for the boom to reach the shrouds and still have about 10 feet or so left? Thanks!

General Discussion / How do you manage your dinghy?
« on: January 22, 2021, 01:23:26 PM »
I'm in the market to get a new dinghy for 2021 season. I'm curious to know how you all travel with your dinghy. Davits? On the foredeck? deflated and stored? towed?

My main question is how big of a dinghy can fit forward of the mast on the deck inflated? On the deck meaning, not poking out from under the lifelines or laying on top of the lifelines. Physically on the deck where it can be safely lashed down.

For those of you that carry it on the foredeck. Do you use your spinnaker halyard off of the beak to hoist it? Do you lift the dinghy by the bow/bow first or from a bridal and lift the hole thing horizontally? Is visibility an issue? How do you handle the outboard? Can the boat and outboard (200 lbs) be lifted as one unit off of the spinnaker beak to the deck?

For those of you with davits, which one's do you have and do you like them? Are they easily removable or do you just leave them up? Part 2 to that question would be how high off of the water does the dinghy need to be lifted to prevent it from touching the water on a heel. How is visibility aft affected?

I'm looking at either an 8'6" or 9'6" aluminum hulled RIB. The main reason is because the transom is a welded structural part of the hull and not just a plank of wood glued on to the tubes. My last dinghy was the latter and I had to glue the transom supports a few times and I really don't want to deal with it again.

This is not a typo.Like many of you, I was annoyed at the limited amount of time the holding rank allowed between emptying.  If you were not in a location where you could dump overboard, you were pretty much screwed.

After looking at all options and not being sold on any, i decied to create my own solution.

My 78 Pearson 323 came with the 40 gal bow tank option. The bow tank had a large crack in it and wasnt usable. The tank is installed before they install the deck to the hull making removal impossible.

I had to cut 3 inches off the rear of tank  just so it could be wiggled out of the bow and then another inch so it would fit through both head doors and the companion hatch. The bow sliding door needs to be removed to get the tank in and out.

After getting the tank home, I mocked up what I wanted and were. I decided to install all fitting centerline down midship so even if the boat heels, not much of anything would drain back into a hose,  and be allowed to sit.

I'm not pumping overboard in my area so a macerator is not a concern and will not be installed. Since the hoses are the weakest point, I wanted little to no waste sitting in a hose. I wanted a tank drain and waste inlet located on top of the tank with a dip tube running to the aft most deepest section of the tank to get everything out when pumped out. This would eliminate that problem.  I finished it off with a big 1 inch vent and a capped inspection port.

After making some calls and asking around I found a company in Florida named Dura Weld. They  make custom welded polyethylene tanks and were highly recommended by a few people. I spoke with Gaerth and assured me the tank will be built like a tank to any spec I supply.

After a lot of digging on the internet, I found the original schematic from the manufacturer of the original bow tank. I checked their measurements to my tank and they were spot on. I instructed Gaerth to build the tank 4 inches shorter then the schematic and where I wanted the ports. An internal baffle was also a must to limit the fluid movement within the tank.

From the time I placed the order until delivery was less than 3 weeks. It fits absolutely perfect.

I will make a follow up post once the boat is splashed and I have used it.

The starboard bow locker is now completely empty. It can easily hold 2 massive 6v batteries and then some if you want to move the house bank forward.

Full disclosure the tank is less then 900 bucks to build plus freight.  Top of the line raritan hose will set you back about 180 bucks and another 50 for the vent line.

If you plan on doing this upgrade, please take these 2 pieces of advice.
 1) Do NOT make this tank from this schematic any longer than 28 inches in overall length or you will not be able to get the tank into the companion hatch or the inner doorways. When I tell you butter is needed to slide this in, it is not an exaggeration.
2) The 4 inches must be removed from the AFT END of the tank to make the overall triangle smaller. Do not take it off of the front.

Here are some pictures. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Exterior Finish and Fiberglass / Epoxy instead of Varnish??
« on: January 15, 2020, 08:37:11 AM »
I just made new trim for the large oval gunwale openings for the winch handles in the cockpit and I am beginning to investigate a modern alternative to 10 coats of varnish over 2 weeks.

I was toying with the idea of using epoxy to build up the depth and then applying 2 coats of varnish on top of the epoxy to protect it from UV. The West site states as long as the epoxy has tacked up, another coat can be applied. This would allow 3 or 4 coats of epoxy to be applied in 1 day shortening the entire project by 10 days.

My only concern is I can't use oil based stain on the wood under the epoxy, I would need to use something water based or the epoxy won't adhere to the wood.

Does anyone have any experiences with this process or any helpful tips they would like to share before I start down this road? Thanks in advance.

Standing & Running Rigging and Fitting/Tuning / Boom Slug Size?
« on: January 15, 2020, 08:17:51 AM »
Hi,
Would anyone happen to know what size to boom slugs are on a 323? In the process of making a sail pack and will be using the track to mount the bottom of the pack. Thanks.

Interior Structures / Interior bulkheads and assorted woodwork
« on: February 25, 2019, 03:28:40 AM »
Would anyone know if the salon bulkheads are solid teak or is it a veneer? I will be refinishing the interior wood this spring and I am trying to prevent suprises while sanding.

Any other area's of the interior I need to be careful with?

What is the finish of choice? I'm considering a satin poly.

Thanks in advance

Deck Mounted Hardware / Mid-Ship Cleats
« on: February 13, 2019, 09:38:35 AM »
Has anyone added mid-ship cleats to their 323's?

Did you mound it on a track car or to the deck?

If it is deck mounted, how close to the toe rail did you mount it and does it interfere with the jib sheets?

Any pictures of the completed project would be helpful.

The previous owner was attempting to seal the fresh water fill on the port side of the boat and stained the deck with whatever it was the he used to seal the water fill port. Its smeared within the teeth of the antiskid deck like 6 inches away from where he was working. Total slob. I'm sure I could use a wire brush or something but it will damage the deck for sure. Any chemicals anyone can recommend to get this crap off my deck? Thanks.
