Universal 5411 in a P28-1 Overheats during Spring Launch
« on: May 23, 2018, 09:43:40 PM »
My 5411 overheated today. As per the engine start service provided by the yacht yard for the spring launch, requiring replacement of the impeller.  Each fall I drain the water from the block and also drain the strainer.  Since this has happened two years in a row I must be doing something wrong.  I am wondering if I should try to refill  the block and/or the strainer with a garden hose before the boat is dropped into the water.  My thinking is that maybe the impeller working so hard to suction in the water to fill up the strainer, block and various hoses gets damaged and in this process the engine gets too warm.

Ideas?  Thoughts?

Thanks.  Bob

If your system is empty, then your pump has nothing to prime with. Adding water to the system through the strainer before you start is the way to go.

Thank you Michael.

Priming the pump seems obvious now.  I will definitely do that next time.
